Enkele jaren geleden ontdekte de Duitse schrijver Jürg Amann de aantekeningen van Auschwitzcommandant Rudolf Höss. In afwachting van de voltrekking van zijn doodvonnis vertelde Höss zijn verhaal, koel, zonder enige wroeging en zonder inzicht in de reikwijdte van zijn handelen. Amann bewerkte dit materiaal tot een ijzingwekkende monoloog. Een beklemmend verslag waarin de lezer tegen wil en dank in het hoofd van een van de grootste massamoordenaars aller tijden wordt gezogen. Jürg Amann (1947) is geboren in Winterthur, Zwitserland. Hij heeft Duitse literatuur gestudeerd in Zürich en Berlijn en is gepromoveerd op Kafka. Hij schreef vele bekroonde romans en publiceerde een biografie over Robert Walser.
