Investigations into mechanisms of why women suffer
from chronic pain significantly more than men.

Gender-specific disparities in pain and neuroinflammation
•
Chronic pain is the number one healthcare problem worldwide.
•
Women suffer from both the sensory and affective (e.g., depression
•
and anxiety) components of chronic pain more frequently than men.
Women are also less responsive to pain therapies than men.
•
Two major risk factors for chronic pain are gender and inflammation.
•
The Goal of this DARE is to investigate the intersection of gender and
•
inflammation in chronic pain through:
epidemiological human studies
•
cellular and molecular studies in human samples and animal models
•
development of targeted therapies (drug delivery, exercise therapy,
•
etc.)
Long term goal: Become a leader in investigating and treating
•
gender-specific health disparities that have neuroinflammation
as a significant underlying mechanism.
