Preface
I interviewed North Indian Hindu men about women, marriage, and family to develop an understanding of how culture works. My analysis of these interviews suggests 
that one way of solving the tricky problem of how culture constrains is to focus on commonsense understandings of human motivation. By highlighting Hindu men's 
commonsense understanding that people are motivated by social pressures, I suggest that such understandings constrain individuals and affect their emotions, social 
life, and social institutions. While focusing on cultural constraint, I also consider how individuals manipulate cultural ideas to advance their own interests.
Cultural Constraint and Innovation
The dominant perspective in the social sciences has been that culture is shared and constraining (Stromberg 1986: 5). This book evaluates the power of this 
perspective. In what way is culture shared within a partitular social group? Are some aspects of culture more shared than others? In what ways do different aspects of 
culture constrain the individual? How do individuals use a common culture to accomplish diverse goals?
I develop an approach to culture that focuses on how commonsense understandings constrain individuals and shape social life, by emphasizing three theoretical tools.
The Hindu men I interviewed largely—although not wholly—share an informal commonsense understanding of what motivates individual action. This distinctive social 
framework for understanding action is different from the dominant framework of American men. Unlike white, middle­class American men, who usually see actions 
as depending on the choices of autonomous individuals (Bellah et al. 1985; Varenne 1977), Hindu men understand individual actions as determined by the social 
group to which the individual belongs. While American men believe an individual's self­control can prevent antisocial action, Hindu men fundamentally distrust any 
individual action unrestrained by caste and family. A focus on how social frameworks

for understanding action constrain individuals is an important contribution of this book.
Individuals use cultural ideas to invest actions with meaning. Because meaning does not inhere in cultural symbols themselves, I focus on culture work. A study of 
culture work considers how individuals manipulate cultural components to attribute meaning to action. My study of culture work asks the following questions: How do 
social frameworks for understanding action influence the culture work that people do? How does social position influence the ability to do culture work? What 
resources enhance the ability to successfully perform culture work?
Finally, following Ann Swidler (1986), I find it helpful to consider strategies of action. Individuals use particular strategies of action when embarking on 
unconventional actions that depart from their routine patterns of action. How do social frameworks for understanding action limit the strategies of action which 
individuals can use? Are people constrained by the strategies of action available in their cultural repertoire?
Comparative Sociology
In anthropology, there has been an increasing interest in ethnopsychology—indigenous understandings of the psyche, mental processes, and human motivation (Lutz 
1988; White and Kirkpatrick 1985; Heelas and Lock 1981). Sociologists, too, have a long tradition of focusing on understanding social action from the point of view 
of the social actor (see Derné 1994a: 268­270). Berger and Luckmann (1966: 15) argue, for instance, that the "sociology of knowledge" must focus on "what people 
'know' as 'reality' in their everyday" lives because these commonsense notions constitute "the fabric of meanings without which no society could exist."
Frameworks for understanding action are an important part of any body of commonsense knowledge. All people, after all, need some way of understanding human 
motivation. This book focuses on the links between ethnopsychological understandings and other parts of social life by pursuing the following sorts of questions: Do 
ethnopsychological beliefs about human motivation shape emotions and psyche? Does Hindu men's framework for understanding action influence their family life? How 
does family structure shape implicit knowledge? Do frameworks for understanding action shape systems of social control or the nature of social movements?

I am also trying to reveal something new about Indian Hindu men. My concern with indigenous understandings of the relationship between person and society has been 
of central concern in South Asian studies. While scholars have long recognized that Indians de­emphasize individual volition, few have focused, as I have, on how 
Indians see action as shaped by their social group (Roland 1988; Kakar [1978] 1981). Fewer still have recognized that Indians are frequently active agents who 
pursue their own private goals (Mines 1988; Béteille 1986). In contrast to scholars who focus on how Indians see individuals as guided by hierarchy (Dumont [1966] 
1980), the abstract laws of dharma (Shweder 1991) or the diverse physical substances they encounter (Marriott 1989; Daniel 1984), I emphasize that while most 
Indians usually see themselves as guided by social pressures, some also follow their individual desires: They marry for love, separate from their families, and break 
caste rules and kinship ideology.
Why have some scholars found that Indians de­emphasize individual choices, while others have emphasized that Indians also sometimes follow their individual desires? 
Are ethnopsychological understandings contradictory and shifting? By answering these questions, I develop a fresh understanding of how Indians view the world, while 
suggesting that ethnopsychological understandings are usually complex and inconsistent.
Gender Inequality
I did not ask men about their family lives in order to examine implicit knowledge. This concern emerged from my analysis of the interviews. Rather, I hoped that by 
talking with men about their motives and desires, I might better understand how culture bolsters gender inequality, a theme I still pursue in this book.
Women's subordination in Indian society is bolstered by an oppressive gender ideology. In this book, I argue that a focus on the culture of the powerful is central to 
understanding the social construction of gender. I pursue the following sorts of questions: How do men use a gender ideology in their own interests? How is a 
particular gender ideology maintained as the dominant one? How do women respond to the dominant gender ideology? I argue that cultural ideas operate to benefit 
social groups that construct them, and suggest that ethnopsychologies may not be shared by both dominant men and subordinate women.

Hindu Gender Culture
Having outlined my main areas of concern, let me briefly describe the gender culture I am examining to get at these concerns. My purpose in doing this in the preface is 
to introduce the reader to the cultural terrain of Indian families, and to the four clusters of ideas and norms I examine in this book. For the moment, I will leave aside 
the question of how shared these ideas are.
First, most Hindu men say that they prefer to live in joint families. Most say that the ideal state of affairs is one in which parents live under one roof and share a 
common hearth with their sons, daughters­in­law, and grandchildren.
Second, most Hindu men prefer arranged marriages. Parents almost always arrange the marriages of their sons and daughters, often without giving the bride and 
groom even one chance to meet before the marriage. The men I interviewed use the English phrase "love marriage" to refer to marriages in which a bride and groom 
choose each other without parental input. Love marriages are uncommon and most men consider them dangerous and improper.
Third, Hindu men continue to restrict women's activities outside the home. Anthropologists report that in village India, men sometimes do not allow their wives and 
mature daughters to go outside the house at all. While most of the men I interviewed allow their wives to go outside the home in certain circumstances, all men restrict 
the time that their female relatives can spend outside the home and carefully monitor the demeanor and actions of women while they are outside the home.
Finally, Hindu men continue to restrict contact between husband and wife. Ethnographies report that the norm in many villages is for a husband and wife to avoid 
each other as much as possible during the day. While most of the urban men I interviewed do not require such strict limitations, most men still embrace some 
restrictions on interaction between husband and wife. Commonly, for instance, men consider it improper to speak with their wives in front of their parents.
