academic discipline only placed among theological
studies in the early 1800s by Fnedrich Schleiermacher.

Long tiine friend and Methodist pastor, Samuel D. Simonds,
told Maday, "I wonder and rejoice in the prosperity that has
attended you most of all that you have had the 91 eatness of

Maclay's younger brother, Robert Samuel,
was a Methodist missionary to China, Japan,
and Korea. He arrived in :ieoul in June of 1884 to
make the survey and was subsequently appointed the first
superintendent of the work in Korea, working from Japan.
He desperately wanted to begin the work in Korea himself,
but alas, that was not to be. On EastPr Sunday, April 5,
1885, Henry and Ella Appenzeller arrived in lncheon, Korea
to be the first Methodist missionaries there. Maclay
returned to the United States in 1887 and
was named Maclay College of Theology's
second dean. He spent the rest of his life as an
educator.
