This book is dedicated to the memory of Leo Liepmann, co-founder of Oxfam and at one time
our landlord in Oxford. Jewish in origin, Quaker in belief, Professor of Economics at Breslau,
he left Germany in 1933, as soon as Hitler came to power, carrying with him a giant bottle of
aspirins which I remember admiring in his kitchen.
