THE PERFECT
WORKSHOP
Simply defined, the perfect workshop is
one thatworks unusuallywell for the spe-
cific projects thatyou plan to tackle. Even if
your neighbor says he has a perfect shop, his
workshop may not fit your own needs. 01-,
he may have his set up in a two—car garage,
and you may have only half the space.
Though there are certain guidelines to con—
sider, no one can tell you exactly how to set
up aworkshop that isperfectforyou.
You can, however, learn from others. Visit
other workshops and ask the owners what
works best for them. Mostwill be more than
happyto tellyou, andmostwillbe extremely
frank about how their tools and shop layout
perform for them. Other sources for ideas
include books, magazines, videos and TV
programs like Home Again. One good book
to get when setting up a shop is The Home
Wrksbop Plannerwhich covers suggestions
forlayingoutavarietyofshops fromscratch.
It is available in bookstores or directly from
the publisher (see backcover).
Meanwhile, use this booklet as a place to
start. It will give you some perspective on
selecting the best tools for your shop, and
also some ideas on how to arrange them in
the space you have available. Shop arrange-
ments and proper tool storage can have a big
impact on how well your shop will work for
you. But keep in mind that no oneparticular
arrangement is etched in stone. Ifyou have
an idea for an arrangement that might work
better, try it. Rearranging bench-top tools is
