PREFACE
I first became interested in the cult of the moon-god Men some
what more than ten years ago while pursuing graduate studies at
Yale University. Prof. C. Bradford Welles encouraged me to write
my dissertation on this subject (no comprehensive treatment having
appeared since Drexler's article in Roscher's Lexikon), and a Ful
bright grant to Greece in 1960-61 enabled me to travel to some of
the places where Men had been worshipped in antiquity. After the
completion of my dissertation, Prof. Harald Ingholt encouraged me
to publish my findings in a series of articles in the journal which he
edited, Berytus. Adverse circumstances under which I was working
at the time were largely responsible for the work in the articles, par
ticularly in the first one, not being as thorough as I would have de
sired. Therefore I was doubly pleased and honored when Prof. Martin
Vermaseren offered me the opportunity to present the material to
better advantage in the series which he edits. Finally, the Research
Council of the University of Missouri generously made available
funds for me to travel in Greece and Turkey in 1969 in order to pre
pare this book.
The present volume is the first of three projected volumes which,
like the Berytus articles, will include the epigraphical material, the
numismatic material, and the testimonia and conclusions, in that
order. In this volume I try in general to follow the model of D.
Tudor's Corpus Monumentorum Religionis Equitum Danuviorum, I
(volume 13 of this series). I start with a brief notice of the monu
ment, when and where it was found, where it is now, and its dimen
sions. Then I list the bibliography, and finally give a detailed de
scription ofthe monument. Certain deviations, however, are imposed
by the material itself. First, unlike Tudor's material, most of the
monuments of Men cult are accompanied by inscriptions, which are
sometimes quite long. Thus the "description" of the monument will
be seen frequently to be almost exclusively composed of the text of
the inscription which it bears. Secondly, unlike Tudor's monuments,
