FOREWORD
Parents and teachers who are likely to read this book are also likely to be personally concerned about the behavior and beliefs of youngsters in the current generation 
of high school students. They want these students to retain the best of the Catholic traditions, even while participating in the post Vatican II revitalization of church and 
society. The task of education has always been to hand down the values of the culture, and the task of the teacher (and parent) has always been to demonstrate how 
these values should be interpreted by the individual conscience.
We like to think that moral values are perennially applicable, that the Ten Commandments of our grandparents' days remain the Ten Commandments of our 
grandchildren. What is at question in this survey study is not the eternal validity of Christian morality, but the motivation for accepting it intellectually and conforming to 
it behaviorally. The assumption of this discourse is that American Catholics had been accustomed to practice a kind of rote religion and morality, adhering to the 
traditional patterns because they have always been there. Since the Second Vatican Council, however, the further assumption has been that motivation comes from 
conscious rather than from long habit.
Motivation is very difficult to measure, and we have to accept the answers of people who tell us why they behave the way they do. Ready explanations of delinquency, 
for example, are provided by school administrators and teachers. First, parents are not exerting the positive influence expected of them in the home environment. 
Second is "peer pressure," because apparently all the other kids are guilty of dissolute behavior. The third excuse seems to be biological, or glandular. It is just 
"natural" for a teenager to loosen up on personal morality. In other words, you can't blame the school for failing to accomplish what the school brochure says it will do.
One of the perennial frustrations of educators in the Catholic secondary school system is the realization that the religious beliefs and practices of their students decline 
from the freshman year to the senior year. As they move toward graduation they attend Mass less frequently and pray less often. Their attitudes become more liberal 
on divorce and birth control. On the other hand, most students make measurable progress in the learning of language and history, of mathematics and science. With 
competent instructors of

religion they do increase their knowledge of the Church and its teachings concerning ethics and morality. There is no question that the content of religion courses, and 
the teaching methods of instructors, have been modernized in the better Catholic high schools like St. Martin's.
When we look at the postgraduate behavior of St. Martin's students we see a reflection of what has been happening in the larger Catholic population. From 1977 to 
1989, weekly Mass attendance went down, from 80 to 50 percent. The minority who are still willing to say that premarital sex is immoral declined from 29 to 20 
percent. It is safe to say that all the measurable norms of devotional Catholicism have shown a downward curve since the Second Vatican Council. Traditional 
teachings about premarital and extramarital sex relations, birth control, and abortion are being more and more questioned. The changes found in the general Catholic 
population over the decades are showing up now in surveys of Catholic high school students.
There can be no question that the American Catholic population is now quite different from its progenitors of a generation or two ago. Obviously, the educational 
institution that interlocks with the other Catholic institutions has also changed along with them. Furthermore, these Catholic people and their institutions have continued 
to be part of the total American culture. To what extent can we compare and identify organized Catholicism in ways that differ markedly from the secular culture of this 
society? The general notion among Catholics and other commentators is that Catholics have become "Americanized." They have "made it" now in the American 
system, successful in business and the professions and in higher education and politics.
In one respect, the Catholic educational enterprise is willing to "go it alone." The whole American network of Catholic secondary schools— diocesan, parochial, and 
private—has been maintained by the voluntary support of the Catholic laity, with no subsidies from public monies. The casual observer may suggest that this 
educational system has "peaked out" and has passed its prime. In the thirteen years from 1977 to 1989 covered by the statistics on St. Martin's high school, there has 
been a national loss of 15 percent in the number of Catholic secondary schools and a 26 percent decline in the number of students attending these schools. Several 
"causes" may help to explain this shrinkage: financial in the high cost of facilities that replace vowed religious personnel; demographic in the smaller cohorts of 
teenage Catholics: credible in the weaker confidence that parents have in such religious education.
Conservative clergy and laity decry the "decline" of Catholic secondary schooling, not in terms of demography or expense or credibility, but in the uneasy feeling that 
the schools have failed to live up to their advertised goals. It is the persistent assumption that the Catholic high school is intended to provide excellent moral and 
spiritual guidance. The religious

aim of the school is to make good Catholics of the students, citizens with a strong sense of social justice and personal morality. Serious research of the "outcomes" of 
these high schools, however, has found that many of the graduates are more secular than religious.
This generalization allows for exceptions, but it would be an error to extrapolate the findings from a successful school like St. Martin's to all secondary Catholic 
schools, nor does the author attempt to do so. Indeed, the personal accounts by the graduates reveal large differences among the students themselves, and sharp 
contrast with their parents. The theology teachers were said to be "liberal," which seems to have left a wide latitude in the students' interpretation of perennial Catholic 
values. The concept of "selective" Catholicism allows for a range, from the nuclear to the marginal Catholic, verging even on the dormant.
One need not claim the gift of prophecy to say that today's youth presage the future of American Catholicism. We have enough data to foretell that these young people 
are likely to replicate the flexible categories of believers who now call themselves Catholics. The schools are producing both "devotional" and "selective" Catholics 
who will identify themselves somewhere along the spectrum of traditionalists at one end and progressives at the other.
It is not always easy to avoid the stereotypes that are readily attributed to religious believers, because conservative, even fundamentalist, Catholics are willing to 
identify themselves. They are likely to promote pilgrimages to Medjugorje, subscribe to The Wanderer, praise the tenets of Opus Dei, and insist that every parish 
should schedule at least one Latin Mass every Sunday. They are far right, both in their politics and in their economic practices. For the most part, they are either 
unaffected by the Council, or think it was a mistake.
Out of the same Catholic system of secondary education there emerge Catholics who laud liberation, lean to the left in politics, and promote programs to relieve the 
homeless. They complain about the authoritarianism of the current Pontiff but participate in Pax Christi, read the Commonweal, and support the claims of Catholic 
feminism. One may wonder how these opposing types of Catholics can come out of the same Catholic school system or whether the bases for their ideology should be 
sought elsewhere.
