Saleem Hashmi is emeritus professor in the School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engi-
neering at Dublin City University, Ireland. He founded the School in January 1987, in
additiontosettinguptheMaterialsProcessingResearchCentre(MPRC),aresearchcentreof
excellenceinthefieldofmaterialsprocessing.
In1990,ProfessorHashmiestablishedAdvancesinMaterialsandProcessingTechnolo-
gies(AMPT),amuch-neededinternationalconferenceinmaterialsprocessing.Hecontinues
to be the chairperson of the steering committee for this series of conferences. In 1998
hewasappointedaseditor-in-chiefofElsevier’sJournalofMaterialsProcessingTechnologyand
continuedinthisroleuntil2008.
In 1995, Professor Hashmi was awarded the higher doctorate degree of DSc, by the
UniversityofManchester,thehighestacademicdegreeanyuniversityintheUKcanaward.
Professor Hashmi has supervised or co-supervised 112 PhD and 55 MEng research
studentstosuccessfulcompletion.Overtheyearshehasalsoactedasanexternalexaminer
and expert assessor for PhD candidates and engineering departments with universities in
Ireland,theUK,India,Pakistan,Bangladesh,HongKong,Canada,Australia,andMalaysia.
Hehaspublishedinexcessof460papersand25bookssofar.
Professor Hashmi was the editor-in-chief for Elsevier’s 13-volume major reference work Comprehensive Materials Processing
whichwaspublishedin2014.
He has been appointed as the editor-in-chief for Elsevier’s Materials Science and Materials Engineering Reference Module, a
14-sectiononlineresourcecomprisingaround3500reviewedarticles.ThislaunchedinDecember,2015andisconstantlybeing
updated.

Imtiaz Ahmed Choudhury is currently a professor at the Department of Mechanical Engi-
neering, University of Malaya (UM), and has been with UM since 1996. He received his
BachelordegreeinMechanicalEngineeringfromBangladeshUniversityofEngineeringand
Technology(BUET),MEngfromAsianInstituteofTechnology(AIT),Thailand,andMScin
Mechanical Engineering from Arizona State University, USA. He obtained his PhD from
DublinCityUniversity.Hestartedhiscareerasanassistantengineerinagastransmission
anddistributioncompany,Dhaka,Bangladesh.Heworkedasamaintenanceengineerina
power station for 3 years in Libya. He started his academic career in 1982 as an assistant
professor in an engineering college, Bangladesh. Since then, he has been working in
academia. Imtiaz’s research interests include traditional/nontraditional machining with
vegetable oil-based lubricant, tool condition monitoring, machining difficult-to-cut and
highstrengthmaterials,injectionmoldingandapplicationanduseofsolarenergy.Hehas
beenamember ofapanel ofjudges fortheSMEinnovationaward2011–2013,Malaysia,
underthecategoryof“ManufacturingSector.”HewasaSenatememberoftheUniversityof
Malaya.Hehasauthoredandcoauthoredabout100papersinreferredjournals,morethan60conferencepapersandsomebook
chapterspublishedinElsevierworks.Hehasalsobeenareviewerofvariousinternationaljournals.ImtiazisaFellowofInstitution
ofMechanicalEngineers,UK(IMecheE),andalifeFellowofInstitutionofEngineers,Bangladesh(IEB).Heisacharteredengineer,
UK(CEng).
Professor Shahjahan Mridha was born in Bangladesh and obtained his BSc and MSc in
Metallurgical Engineering at the Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology
(BUET),Dhaka,andPhDattheUniversityofLeedsinUK(1980)onGasNitridingofLow
Alloy Steels. Since 1972 he has worked at the Department of Metallurgical Engineering,
BUETfor20yearsasafacultymemberexceptfor1986–1987wherehewasaCommonwealth
AcademicStaffmemberattheUniversityofBirmingham,UK,workingonPlasmaNitriding.
ProfessorMridhawasaseniorresearchfellowattheUniversityofStrathclyde,UKfrom
1989–1994 and worked on laser processing of aerospace materials in collaboration with
UKMinistryofDefence.Inlate1994hemovedtoNanyangTechnologicalUniversity(NTU)
in Singapore where he was employed as an associate professor until 2001, working on
semiconductormaterials,compositeandintermetalliccoatings.
In January 2002 he joined the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) as
professor, later assuming the position of Head of the Department of Manufacturing and
MaterialsEngineering.HeleftIIUMinJuly2012tojointheDepartmentofMechanicaland
AerospaceEngineeringattheUniversityofStrathclyde(UK)asaLeverhulmeTrustProfessor,
andremainstherepresentlyasvisitingprofessor.
Professor Mridha has published more than 150 journal and conference papers. His research contributions are primarily on
microstructure–properties relationships, semiconductor materials and surface modification of light alloys and steel using high
powerlaserandTIGtorchmeltingtechnology.HeisthepioneerofTIGtorchtechniquesforsurfacecoatingapplications.Professor
MridhaissubjecteditoroftheMetallicMaterialssectioninElsevier’sReferenceModuleinMaterialsScienceandMaterialsEngineering
launchedinDecember2015.
Inadditiontohisacademiccareer,ProfessorMridhaworkedasaninternationalconsultantfortheUnitedNationsIndustrial
Development Organization (UNIDO) from 2001 until 2007, delivering expert advice and training to engineers working in
manufacturingindustriesintheIndianandAfricancontinents.

Bekir Sami Yilbas is a distinguished professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department,
King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia. He received his PhD in
Mechanical Engineering from Birmingham University, and was awarded a doctorate of
EngineeringatBirminghamin2005duetohissignificantcontributiontohisfieldofstudy.
Hehasreceivednumerousawardsasrecognitionofhisresearchwork.Someoftheseinclude
