Firefighters extinguish blaze at Elizabeth Street home

Swift action from Amsterdam residents likely helped lessen the
damage sustained from a fire extinguished at a multi-family home on
Elizabeth Street Monday night.
Resident Daniel Gonzalez said he thought he smelled something
burning when he and Liza Cruz arrived at Joe’s Market on Market
Street in Amsterdam, but at first they did not see anything. Cruz
eventually entered the store to tell Gonzalez the two-story home
behind the market was ablaze.
Cruz said when she called 911 to report the fire around 7 p.m. that
emergency services had not received a prior report about the blaze.
Cruz then ran into the store to tell Gonzalez and then they went to
10-12 Elizabeth St. to notify residents their home was ablaze.
Gonzalez said he and Cruz were the first ones at the scene and none
of the residents inside the home appeared to know it was on fire
before they started notifying occupants.
Jackie Figueroa, who lives in one of the first floor units, said she
awoke to commotion with people exiting their apartments and the
sound of sirens outside.
“A friend of mine is out here screaming ‘fire, fire,’ but I think he’s
joking,” She said. “Then when I see the fireman is kicking my door I
realize ‘oh my god it is a fire’, and I just came out and it was on fire.”
Amsterdam Fire Chief Michael Whitty said firefighters quelled the
majority of the flames by running a fire hose through the interior of
the building and up to the second floor. He said firefighters were on
the roof assessing how far the fire may have extended from the roof.
Whitty said all occupants appeared to have safely exited and there
were no reported injuries.

Amsterdam Department of Public Works crews recently cleared
a patch of land on the city’s South Side to make way for public
restrooms to be installed, according to local officials.
Mayor Michael Villa said Monday the city will seek bids for a
prefabricated restroom facility, which will be installed on vacant
city-owned land on Bridge Street near the Mohawk Valley Gateway
Overlook pedestrian bridge.
Villa said city workers will construct the foundation for the
restrooms and connect water and sewer infrastructure. He said
National Grid will connect electricity to the facility.
A few parking spaces will likely be added through the project, expand-
ing the existing public lot, according to Villa. He said the restroom facil-
ity would probably be installed in the spring, if not sooner.

Joseph D. Montuoro

Mr. Joseph D. Montuoro, 88, formerly of W. Main St., Amsterdam,
N.Y., passed away Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, at River Ridge Living
Center.
He was born Jan. 5, 1929 in Amsterdam, N.Y., a son of Vito and
Nancy Montuoro. He was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School
and of Hudson Valley Community College, Troy, N.Y., where he
mastered the automotive program.
Mr. Montuoro proudly served in the U.S. Army from November
1950 through September 1952 as a corporal with A Company, 10th
Engineers, First Army and was awarded the Korean Service Medal
with two bronze stars.
For over 50 years, Mr. Montuoro owned and operated Montuoro’s
Service on West Main Street.
Joseph was a member of the former Church of St. Michael the
Archangel and a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Roman Catholic Church. He was an active member of the Knights of
Columbus Council 209 and enjoyed traveling and bowling. Most of
all he enjoyed his work and family.
He was married to Mary Wiesner Montuoro. She died in 2015. He
was also predeceased by his daughter Patricia Marie Montuoro on
Oct. 24, 1980 and sister Yolanda ‘Yo’ Greene in 2016.
