internationalcrisis,facingsevereproblemsinbothdomesticpoliticsand
foreignpolicy.Nearlytwodecadeslater,YongDengprovidesanoriginal
accountofChina’sremarkablerisefromtheperipherytothecenterstageof
thepost–coldwarworld.Dengexamineshowtheoncebeleagueredcoun-
tryhasadaptedto,andproactivelyrealigned,theinternationalhierarchy,
great-powerpolitics,anditsregionalandglobalenvironmentinorderto
carve out an international path within the globalized world. Creatively
engaging with mainstream international relations theories and drawing
extensivelyfromoriginalChinesematerial,thisisawell-groundedassess-
ment of the promises and challenges of China’s struggle to manage the
interlacingofitsdomesticandinternationaltransitionsandtheinteractive
processbetweenitsriseandevolvingworldpolitics.
