Session Description

The 2017 workshop uncovered efforts road authorities are making as they prepare to achieve
a high degree of compliance with the functional needs machine vision equipment.
Participants discussed consistency in traffic control devices and geometric design, cloud-
supported mapping services, and international efforts to harmonize approaches to machine
vision compliance despite poor participation from machine vision suppliers.

Determining the suitability of roadway segments for AV operations will aid developers,
suppliers, vehicle manufacturers, users, and road network owners and operators. This
understanding of the interaction between machine vision systems and the roadway
environment will be a critical component of agency planning for autonomous vehicle
deployments.

TRB Research Problem Statements that will lead to recommendations for roadway readiness
based on TCD applications and condition.

Session Description

The deployment of automated vehicles, shared mobility services, and other transformational
technologies has the potential to dramatically increase safety, reduce congestion, improve
access, enhance sustainability, and spur economic development. However, success in
meeting these goals is not assured, and there are significant risks that these deployments
could cause negative results.

The National Academies-TRB Forum on Preparing for Automated Vehicles and Shared Mobility
was officially launched in early 2018 to facilitate the evidence-based research that is needed
to deploy these technologies in a manner and timeframe that informs policy to meet these
long-term goals.

The TRB Forum has identified more than 100 questions facing those who will be developing
policies to accommodate these new technologies and services. Panelists from the public and
private sectors and academia will discuss these questions, what research has been
completed and what the priorities should be moving forward.

FHWA Road Weather Management Program: Investigating
Automation and Adverse Weather

Session Description

How does adverse weather affect automated vehicles? Can radar penetrate falling rain or
an iced antenna? How well do vision systems handle a dusting of snow? How are drivers
informed about vehicle performance? Come see the results of controlled experiments in
adverse weather with three production vehicles. And then share your own thoughts on what
additional research is needed. Your valuable input can help shape U.S. Department of
Transportation research that benefits all. It can influence how the state and local
departments of transportation make the roadways more amenable to automated vehicles
during adverse weather.

1:45 PM – 2:15 PM Controlled Experiments of Automated Vehicles in Adverse Weather
Three production automated vehicles were tested in a variety of simulated and real adverse
weather conditions. High- and low-speed following were tested, as were lane keeping on
straight and curved alignments. As expected, some conditions were easily handled by the
vehicles and some were not handled at all. There were surprises, too. We will show the results.

What is the path to Connected and Automated Vehicle (CAV) roadworthiness? How will we
get there? In this session we’ll discuss the latest in CAV testing programs and how we can
collaborate across those programs to accelerate progress. We’ll explore city- and nation-
level perspectives on how to best leverage our current capabilities. And we’ll brainstorm with
experts from around the globe on how they’re currently partnering and what will need to
change to support the next wave of industry advancements. Join the conversation with
testbeds of all types and tenures, safety advocates, technology developers, public agencies,
and other transportation stakeholders as we set the stage for the next stage!

Cybersecurity of Automated Vehicles Ecosystem

Session Description

Cybersecurity of automated vehicles (AV) is paramount to successfully deploy this
technology. Indeed, attacks on AV have been recently demonstrated. These attacks
targeted the vehicle itself, i.e. its sensors (LIDAR, RADAR, Camera, Ultrasonic sensor, GPS)
and its perception. For the last three AVS editions, the security community agreed on
existing challenges, but no holistic solution have been fully worked out yet. In this session,
we will consider the entire ecosystem and discuss challenges facing each component.
The main objective will be to connect them to identify commonalities and differences in
order to propose an end-to-end solution (or at least a roadmap to achieve it).

Topics of the session therefore include:
• Automated Vehicles security: how to secure the vehicle itself
• Automated Vehicles infrastructure security: how to secure the supporting
infrastructure and connection to it
• Human Factors and cybersecurity: how to include human factors into security
solution (especially reaction, hand-over)
• System resilience: how to build the ecosystem such as it continues to deliver
services required for AV mission

• Present recent results on how to secure the AV ecosystem (vehicle, infrastructure,
user)
