About this guide
Thisusersguideprovidesinformationfortheinstallationconfigurationandoperationof
BlackMagic(version2.1&above)digital proofingsoftware.
Conventions for instruction steps
Theinstructionalproceduresconsistofmainstepsanddetailedsub-steps.
Themainstepshavenumberedheadingsinboldtype,andthedetailedsub-stepsare
sequencedusinglowercaseletters.
Asshowninthesamplebelow,thesub-stepscontainavarietyoftypestylesandthese
areexplainedinthetablefollowing.
Thisstructureletsyouscanthemainsteps,referringtothedetailedsub-stepswhen
necessary.Asummaryofthemainstepsappearsatthebeginningof all procedures

Overview
BlackMagic
BlackMagicisadigitalproofingsystem thattakesatotallynewapproachtodigital
proofing
Insteadofreceivingpagestobeproofedaspostscriptdata,BlackMagicusesthe
bitmapfiles(rippeddata)producedbytheimagesetter/platesetterRIPasthedatato
produceaproof.Thisensuresdataintegrityontheproof.Anyproblemsthatcanoccur
inthefinalfilmorplate,willalsobereproducedonaprooffromtheBlackMagicsystem.
ProblemsidentifiedbyBlackMagicinclude:
• Fontsubstitution
• Highresolution/lowresolutionimagesubstitution
• Rippingproblems
• Trappingproblems
• Textre-flowproblems
• RGBimagesindocument
• Fitproblems
Inadditiontoidentifyingtheaboveproblems,BlackMagicproducescheckorcontract
proofs(dependingontheprooferscolourfidelity)whichcanbegiventocustomers
insteadofconventional chemical proofs.TheseBlackMagicproofssavebothlabour
andmaterialsandalsoprovideafasterturn-aroundtimeforcustomerproofsand
validationofthecorrectnessof apage.
BlackMagiccanalsoproofjobscontainingspecialcolours.Thisisparticularlyusefulfor
thepackagingindustry.Thereisnoneedtoconvertspecialstoprocesscoloursjustfor
proofing.BlackMagicautomaticallyhandlesspecial coloursandprovidesanon-board
databaseof colours,whichtheusercanextendasrequired.
BlackMagicalsoprovidesabuilt-inlevel 2PostscriptRIP(BlackMagicProandBureau
only)thatcanbeusedforpre-flightcheckingof pagesdirectlyfromtheMacintosh,
WindowsandUNIXdesktopwithoutneedingtosendthejobtotheimagesetter/
platesetterRIPfirst.Notethedifferenceinterminology.Othermanufacturerscallthis
typeof proofadigitalproof.Werefertoitasapre-flightcheckproof,sincethe
Imagesetter/PlatesetterRIPhasnotyetrippedthejob.
Atruedigitalproofisoneproducedfromtheactual bitmapfilesgeneratedbythe
Imagesetter/PlatesetterRIP.Thisissimilartochemical proof,whichisproducedby
usingthefilmitself.Apre-flightproofisgeneratedfromPostscriptdatare-rippedata
differentresolutionbytheRIPdrivingthedigital proofer.
BlackMagicprovidesarangeof colourcontrolstoproducethehighestfidelitycolouron
anyproofer.ItsupportsindustrystandardICCprofilestoallowmatchinganyprinting
processaswell asLUT(lookuptables)toprovideunsurpassedcolourcontrol.Italso
providesautomaticcolourreplacementofplates.Thisisidealforautomatically
producingblue-lineproofstochecktrappingandotherpackagingrelatedproblems.
Nesting(paperoptimisation)isincludedwithBlackMagic.Nestingallowstheprintingof
manysmallpagesonlargeformatprinterswithoutwastingpaper.BlackMagic
automaticallyplacespagessidebysideintheoptimal configurationtomaximiseprint
areaandconservepaper.

Functional overview
Beforedescribingthephilosophybehindtheoperationof BlackMagicafewtermsneed
tobedefined.
OutputDevice:Anoutputdeviceisaphysicalprinter,prooferorplotter.Theterm
outputdeviceisusedratherthanprinter,soastodistinguishitfromaprinter
configurationwithinBlackMagic(seebelow).
Destination:AdestinationwithinBlackMagicisaconfigurationitemthatinforms
BlackMagicaboutthephysical connectionofanoutputdevicetotheBlackMagichost
computer.ItallowsBlackMagictosendinformationtooutputdeviceusingavarietyof
networkingprotocolsandoperatingsystem services.Destinationscanbeusedtosend
toremoteoutputdevicesattachedtoothercomputers,outputdevicewithprintserver
boxesattachedtothem,aswell astoanyoutputdeviceontheInternet.The
possibilitiesareunlimited.
Printer:Aprinterdefinesthecapabilitiesofanattachedoutputdevice.BlackMagic
usesthistodeterminethecharacteristicsofthatdeviceandtopresenttheuserwith
appropriateoptionswhenconfiguringPagesetups.Theprinteralsodefinesthequeue
usedbyBlackMagictoschedulejobsforoutputonthatdevice.Aprintertogetherwitha
destinationfullydescribestheattachedprinterandallowsBlackMagictodeterminehow
jobsshouldbeprocessedandsenttoit.
Pagesetup:Apagesetupdefinesvarioussettingsrequiredforprocessingpages.
Thesesettingsincludecolourmanagement,screening,scaling,rotation,de-screening
qualityaswell ashowotherusersonthenetworkwill printtoBlackMagicusingthis
pagesetup.
Pagesetupsareattachedtospecificprinterdefinitions.Anunlimitednumberof
Pagesetupscanbecreatedforaparticularprinterallowingtheusertoconfigure
differentPagesetupsfordifferentprintingconditionslikeforexampledifferentprinting
stock,differentprintingprocessestomatch,differentoutputresolution.
RIPS
ARIPdefinesanimagesetterorplatesetterRIPthatBlackMagicshouldpollforjobs.
SettingslikethetypeofRIP,jobdirectoryandpollingintervalaredefinedhere.
OnceaRIPisconfiguredandthepollingisturnedon,BlackMagicwillpresenttheuser
withalistofalreadyrippedjobsintheRipMonitorwindow.Thesejobscanthen,either
manuallyorautomatically,bequeuedforproofingtooneofthealreadyconfigured
Pagesetups. JobsprocessedfromaconfiguredRIPprovideatruedigitalprooffrom
thedotsproducedbytheimagesetter/platesetterRIP.
