1 General Safety Information, Regulated Applications and Operation
1.1 Prerequisites for Safe Operation
Throughout this Instruction Bulletin the Armored Variable Area Flowmeter is referred to as the
instrument.
This Instruction Bulletin contains important instructions for the safe and correct operation of the
instruments.
It is essential that they be followed to assure safe operation.
Ignoring this information can impact the safety of the operating personnel and result in damage to the
instruments and facilities.
Therefore only operate the instruments
(cid:127) in an undamaged condition
(cid:127) in accordance with the regulations,
(cid:127) in a safety and hazard conscious manner and
(cid:127) by observing all the information in this Instruction Bulletin.
Read this Instruction Bulletin prior to placing the instruments in operation, removing the instruments from
service, performing maintenance or repair operations .
Target Groups This Instruction Bulletin targets the following groups:
(cid:127) the user,
(cid:127) the installer,
(cid:127) the start-up personnel and
(cid:127) the operator.
Qualifications of Only qualified personnel who have had experience with the installation, operation and maintenance of

1.2 Regulated Applications
The Flowmeter Primary Simulator is to be exclusively used for specified regulated applications.
Every usage which exceeds the specifications is considered to be non-specified. Any damages resulting
therefrom are not the responsibility of the manufacturer. The user assumes all risk for such usage.
The applicable specifications include the installation, start-up and service requirements specified by the
manufacturer.
Installation, Please read this Instruction Bulletin and the safety notes before attempting installation, start-up or

Operating
Only qualified personnel should have access to the instrument. The personnel should be familiar with the

The operator has the sole and complete responsibility for well informed operation in accordance with the
specifications and thereby safe operation.
The user must assure that the target groups understand the contents of the Instruction Bulletin. A copy
of the Instruction Bulletin must always be available at the instrument installation location and kept in a
designated place.
National The Regulations, Standards and Guidelines referenced in this Instruction Bulletin are applicable in
Regulations Germany. The applicable National Regulations must be observed when using the instruments in other
countries.
1.3 Safe Operation
Safety and The instruments conform to the latest state of the art technology. They are manufactured and tested in
Safe Operation accordance with DIN EN Part1/IEC 10 10-1 “Safety Regulations for Electrical Measurement, Control,
Regulator and Laboratory Instruments” and are shipped from the factory in a safe and undamaged
condition.
In order to maintain this condition and to assure safe operation, the safety notes identified by the symbol
must be observed. Otherwise injury to personnel and damage to the instrument and other equipment
may result.
The following symbols identify those sections of text which are especially important.
DANGER This symbol is used for all Safety Notes in this Instruction Bulletin which
impact personnel safety. Observe these Safety Notes. Please inform
other users of these Safety Notes.
In addition to the Safety Notes in this Instruction Bulletin, the generally
applicable safety and accident prevention requirements must also be
considered.
WARNING This symbol is used in this Instruction Bulletin to identify the special
considerations which must be observed relative the Regulations,
Specifications, Notes and the correct sequence of operations, as well as
those important for preventing damage or destruction of the instrument.

1.4 This Must be Observed
Prior to Installation Select the least hazardous site for the installation.
The installation location must satisfy the requirements defined in the Chapter „Specifications: Installation
Requirements, Ambient Requirements“.
If you are installing instruments from various manufacturers, please consult with ABB.

Prior to an instrument start-up/restart-up check that the connected supply power agrees with the
specifications on the Instrument Tag.
The user must have the installation checked and tested by a qualified electrical technician prior to the
initial start-up for:
(cid:127) correct assembly,
(cid:127) correct installation and
(cid:127) correct operation,
(cid:127) fire alarm and fire extinguishing equipment.
During Operation The operator must have a qualified electrical technician check the installation at specific time intervals for:
(cid:127) correct assembly,
(cid:127) correct installation and
(cid:127) correct operation.
The time intervals for the checks are to be selected so that possible problems, which are bound to occur,
are recognized in a timely manner.
The checks must be conducted at least once every three years.
The checks are not required if the electrical system is constantly being monitored by a responsible
engineer.
The operator must:
(cid:127) maintain the system in a proper condition,
(cid:127) constantly monitor the system,
(cid:127) immediately undertake any required maintenance and repair operations and
(cid:127) satisfy the required safety measures.
Clean the instruments often when operating in regions where dust may initiate hazardous explosions.
During Before maintenance and/or repair operations are performed on electrical equipment or instruments, the

In an emergency, immediately turn the equipment off using the Emergency Off
switch.

1.6 Hazardous Material Information
In view of the Disposal Law of 27 Aug. 86 (AbfG. §11 Special Wastes) the owner of special wastes is
responsible for its care and the employer also has, according to the Hazardous Material Law of 01 Oct.
86 (GefStoffV, §17 General Protection Responsibility), a responsibility to protect his employees, we must
make note that:
a) all flowmeter primaries and/or flowmeter converters which are returned to ABB Automation Products
GmbH for repair are to be free of any hazardous materials (acids, bases, solvents, etc.).
b) the flowmeter primaries must be flushed so that the hazardous materials are neutralized. There
are cavities in the primaries between the metering tube and the housing. Therefore after metering
hazardous materials, these cavities are to be neutralized (see Hazardous Material Law -GefStoffV).
c) for service and repairs written confirmation is required that the measures listed in a) and b) have
been carried out.
d) any costs incurred to remove the hazardous materials during a repair will be billed to the owner of
the equipment.

Packing for Transporting or Returning to the Manufacturer
If the original packing material is no longer available, the instrument should be packed in bubble wrap
or corrugated cardboard and placed in a box with adequate shock absorbing material (foam, etc.). The
thickness of the shock absorbing material is to be selected based on the weight and shipping method.
The box is to marked as “Fragile Material”.
For overseas shipment the meter is to be sealed in an additional air tight 0.2 mm thick polyethylene foil
bag containing a desiccant (e.g. silica gel). The quantity of desiccant is to be based on the volume of the
package and be suitable for the expected shipping time (at least 3 months). In addition, the box is to be
lined with a layer of double tar paper.

Principle of Operation
3 Principle of Operation
The application proven, rugged metal tube flowmeters of the Series AM54 include an intelligent 2-wire
electronic converter, i.e. the supply voltage and the output signals utilize the same leads. The flowmeter
can be used metering the flow of liquids, gases and steam in the Process, Chemical, Pharmaceutical as
well as in the Food industries. It especially suitable for installations where aggressive or opaque fluids are
to be metered or in those applications where glass meter tube flowmeters cannot be used because of
safety considerations. The metal tube flowmeters are indispensable where high pressure and/or high
temperature operating conditions exist. The flowmeter primary is made of a conical meter tube with
welded flanges, see Fig. 1. A magnet embedded in the float transmits the position of the float in the meter
tube, which is a measure of the flowrate, over a decouple proof magnet follower system. The flowrate
value can be read on a scale from the position of the pointer, which is mounted on a shaft, and
simultaneously on the display. The flowrate value is processed in the 2-wire converter into a proportional,
linear output signal (4−20mA).
HART-Protocol capability, an optional pulse output and the ability to linearized the flowrate curve are
outstanding features of this instrument. The HART-Protocol enables digital communication between a
Process Control System/PC, Handheld Terminal and the flowmeter. The modular design of the float
allows changes to be made, within certain limits, in order to change the flow ranges in existing
instruments. This feature allows existing instruments to be utilized for other application tasks. An added
benefit is the ability to quickly modify instruments in stock for use in a wide spectrum of application
requirements.
