ABSTRACT The assertion that Acoraceae and Araceae (including Lemnaceae) form a group distinct from Arecaceae requires the establishment of a new subclass, Aridae. Itsposition within Liliopsida (monocots) is between Tnurididae and Liliidae. ArecidaeisplacedadjacenttoCommelinidae. KEY WORDS: Liliopsida,Andae, nomenclature On-going phylogenetic studies on Liliopsida (monocots) necessitate some taxonomicrealignments. Thecombined analysis by Chase et al. (1995) demonstrates that Arecidae {setisu Cronquist 1988) is polyphyletic. The new subclass includes AcoraceaeandAraceae(includingLemnaceae). Aridae Reveal,subclasselslat. nov. basedon the Latin descnption associated with a F.G. Banling {Ord. Nal. PL: 25, 65. Sep 1830, as Class Aropsida ["Aroideae"]) name.
