University of Durham, UK. His research interests include the history of
translation, linguistics and Arabic literature.

The seeds for this book were sown over a long period of time by successive
cohorts of students, who, together with their present (and future) counterparts,
constitute the primary target group for the present book.
It was their thought-provoking and often complex questions that prompted us
to start thinking about designing a work of this kind. And so, our first thanks
must go to all our students, some of whose questions will, it is hoped, be
answered here.
In addition to students, we benefited from equally thought-provoking – and
critical – exchanges with colleagues both at home and abroad.
However, the single biggest thanks is also an apology, to our long-suffering
editor at Routledge, Andrea Hartill, whose patience we severely tested. We can
only hope that the result was worth the wait and thank her for what at times
seemed boundless endurance and forbearance.
