Appetite Guide for Commercial Insurance

The EMC Appetite Guide is designed to provide a tool for our Independent Agents to evaluate EMC Insurance
Companies appetite for various classifications of risk. Our appetite is based on past experience and classification
expertise, and is wide ranging. While using this Guide, remember that no two risks are exactly alike, and that
individual risks may be better or worse that the norm of the classification involved. Because of individual risk
variations within classes, accounts with unacceptable grades may be approved with appropriate justification, while
accounts with acceptable grading may not. All potential policyholders must meet EMC Insurance Companies
minimum underwriting requirements to be considered.

Following are color coded grading numbers, with explanations to indicate the degree of desirability for the
occupancy/operation to EMC:

1. DESIRABLE - A desirable class of business barring unusual conditions not typical of the occupancy/operation
and subject to normal underwriting requirements.

2. ACCEPTABLE - A good class of business that is regularly written. Risks will usually have conditions or special
hazards that management must show control over to meet underwriter approval.

3. RISK by RISK - A challenging class of business that poses increased severity exposures. Not regularly written.
Must be better than average and must be supported by complete underwriting information. May require a
pre-inspection. Agency control of the business and agency track record with EMC are key considerations.

4. PROHIBITED - Considered extremely hazardous, this is a class of business that is not compatible with EMC’s
underwriting philosophy.

We do not typically pursue monoline business, but if you have a good account where a portion of it can be written
elsewhere – please discuss it with your underwriter.
