Notes for Sir Bartholet Leigh Lee:
Bartholet Lee must have quite a few skeletons in his closet. The
descendants of his third Family are too embarrassed to share this
information outside of their immediate family. Bartholet is buried at
Salem Church Cemetery in an unmarked grave. This probably means his
mother Matilda (Oney) Lee was buried there at her death March of 1870.
Prior to the Civil War,Bartholet seems to have invested in real estate,
by the number of deed transactions. After the Civil War, Bartholet
appears to have lost all of his real estate holdings for debt accumulated
during the Civil War. He was High Sheriffof Fentress County, Tennessee
many years prior to the Civil War. During theCivil War he was the clerk

at the courthouse until 1865. In November of 1866he probably fled to
Casey County Kentucky where he died in 1873.

* When Union soldiers arrived at Retreat, they pillaged the house. In doing so they found a Bible hidden under
the floorboards. Upon learning that the house belonged to a minister, the officer in charge reversed the order to
burn the house. The bible disappeared but eighty years later a member of the Walker family received it in the
mail. The package bore a Vermont postmark but no return address.

LEIGH IN WHICH IT BELONGED - who obtained this vital record and why cover up of record?

I saw your posting on RootsWeb about Ella Caledonia Lee daughter of Elam Lee. She was my great great
grandmother. She married John Jesse Mauk. They had a son Claud Mauk who married Charlotte Bosworth. They
had a son Claud Mauk who married Nezzie Dickerson. They had a daughter Claudia Inez Mauk who is my
