Thisisanidealbookforgraduatestudentsandresearchersinterested
intheaerodynamics,structuraldynamics,andflightdynamicsofsmall
birds,bats,andinsects,aswellasofmicroairvehicles(MAVs),which
presentsomeoftherichestproblemsintersectingscienceandengineer-
ing. The agility and spectacular flight performance of natural flyers –
madepossiblebytheirflexible,deformablewingstructuresaswellas
outstanding wing, tail, and body coordination – are particularly sig-
nificant.TodesignandbuildMAVswithperformancecomparableto
naturalflyers,itisessentialtounderstandnaturalflyers’combinedflex-
iblestructuraldynamicsandaerodynamics.Theprimaryfocusofthis
book is to address recent developmentsin flappingwing aerodynam-
ics. This book extends the work presented in Aerodynamics of Low
ReynoldsNumberFlyers(Shyyetal.2008).
Dr.WeiShyyistheProvostoftheHongKongUniversityofScience
and Technology and former Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson Collegiate
ProfessorandDepartmentChairofAerospaceEngineeringattheUni-
versityofMichigan.Shyyistheauthororco-authoroffourbooksand
numerousjournalandconferencearticlesdealingwithabroadrange
oftopicsrelatedtoaerialandspaceflightvehicles.HeisEditorofthe
CambridgeAerospaceSerieswithVigorYang(GeorgiaTech)andCo–
Editor-in-Chief of the nine-volume Encyclopedia of Aerospace Engi-
neering (2010). He received the 2003 AIAA Pendray Aerospace Lit-
eratureAwardandtheASME2005HeatTransferMemorialAward.
He has led multi-university centers under the sponsorship of NASA,
theU.S.AirForceResearchLaboratory,andindustry.Hisprofessional
viewshavebeenquotedinvariousnewsmedia,includingtheNewYork
TimesandUSAToday.
Dr. Hikaru Aono is a Research Scientist at the Institute of Space
andAstronauticalScience,JapanAerospaceExplorationAgency.He
has made contributions to biological aerodynamics and related fluid-
structureinteractionissues.
Dr.Chang-kwonKangisaPostdoctoralResearchFellowattheUniver-
sity of Michigan. His expertise includes analytical and computational
modelingoftheperformanceofflappingwingsformicroairvehicles,
aeroelasticdynamicsofflappingwings,andothercomplexsystems.
Dr. Hao Liu is a Professor of Biomechanical Engineering at Chiba
UniversityinJapan.Heiswellknownforhiscontributionstobiologi-
cal,flapping-flightresearch,includingnumerouspublicationsoninsect
aerodynamicssimulationsandphysicalrealizationofMAVs.
