ThisisDr.RalphSmedley,thefounderofToastmasters. Hisbeliefintheimportanceofhumandevelopmenthasbeenthe
verybasisofthebirthanddevelopmentofthecurrentToastmasterseducationprograms.

ThecurrentToastmastersEducationProgramandmaterialshaveahistoryofmanyyear’sdevelopmentandimprovementand
youmustbefullyawareoftheirvalues. Itisalsoclearthatthepassingoftimehasmadeitnecessarytoupdatethecontents
andincorporateimprovements. Forexample,thechangeofsocialenvironment,thebirthofnewtheories, ITdevelopment
andglobalization,thesearesomeofthemoreimportantfactorsnecessitatingimprovements.
In2010, ToastmastersInternationalBoardofDirectorsadoptedastrategicplanforToastmastersfuturedevelopmentwhich
includedadecisiontorevitalizetheeducationprograminordertoenhanceitspotentialforthefuturegrowth. Sucha
decisionhaspavedtheroadfortheoverallrevampingoftheToastmasterseducationprograms,whichhasresultedinthe
completionoftheneweducationprogramofficiallynamedPathways. ThisPathwaysisexactlywhatweareintroducingto
youtoday.

Toastmasters’educationprogramshasalwaysbeentheprogramsinwhichlearnerswilllearncommunicationandleadership
inmomentsofenjoyment. PathwayswillretainthismostimportantattributeoftheToastmastersprograms.

Isitgoingtobeconfusingtohaveasmanyastenpathstochoosefrom? Wehave10differentpathssothateachindividual
membercanfindthebestpossiblepathtosuitthemember’sparticularneedandobjective. Whenwesay“communication”,
thereareavarietyofcommunicationsandwhenwesayleadership,thesamecanbesaid. Whenanewmemberjoins
Toastmasters, thememberwillgetasuitablePathbyansweringsimplequestions. Itisalsopossibleforthemembertoselect
someotherPathdespitetherecommendation. Byansweringasetofsimplequestions,thememberisalsomadeawareofthe
reasonwhythememberhasdecidedtojoinToastmasters. Becomingmoreclearlyawareofthereasonforjoining
ToastmasterswillbeusefulinmakingthefutureToastmastersjourneymoreeffectiveanduseful.

IntheearlystageofPathwaysprogramdevelopment,theteamidentifiedsome100competenciesthatcanbelearnedinthe
currenteducationprograms. Thosecompetencieswerefurtherdividedandalsoadditionalcompetenciesaddedtoatotalof
some300competenciesinPathways. Thosecompetencieswerethengroupedintofivegroups,whicharecalledCore
Competencies. Thosefivecorecompetenciesare①PublicSpeaking,②InterpersonalCommunication,③StrategicLeadership,
④Managementand⑤Confidence. Confidence,thefifthCoreCompetency,issomethingthatisacquiredasaresultof
learningsomethingbutnotconfidenceitself. Therefore,whilebeingleftasaCoreCompetency,itisnotanobjectoflearning.
10Pathsaretheresultsofcombiningthosecorecompetenciesbydifferingdegreesofemphasisoneachcorecompetency.

EachPathhasfivedifferentlevelswithanascendingdegreeofexpertiselearnedinthePath. Mostofthoselevelshave3
projectsperlevel. TherearesomeprojectsthatarecommonlyincludedinallPaths. IceBreaker,forexample,isincludedinall
Pathsasastartingproject. OthersuchcommonprojectsincludeEvaluationandMentoring. ProjectsaredividedintoCore
ProjectsthatallmembershavetotakeandElectiveProjectsthatmemberscanchoose. ToconcludeonePath,youneedto
completeatleast14projectsthatinclude15speeches.
EvaluationandMentoring, whichareveryimportantelementsinToastmasterslearningbuthavebeenlefttoindividual
judgementtosomelargeextent,arenowofferedascoreprojects,averyinterestingandimportantimprovementinPathways.

Pathwaysaredesignedaroundonlinelearningandall10PathscanbetakeneitherinEnglishorinJapaneseaswellasinseven
otherlanguages.
Withprintmaterials,youcantakePathwaysbutthenumberofavailablePathsarelimitedto5inEnglishand2inJapanese.
OnlinePathwaysalsoofferreadyaccesstomanyreferencematerialssuchasadditionalreadingmaterials,videosand
interactiveactivities. Withprintmaterials,thoseadditionalmaterialsarelimitedandsupplyofproject-relatedmaterialsrelies
