ANewMicropeplidSpecies(Coleoptera) from
Yunnan Province,Southwest China

Abstract A new Yunnanesespeciesof thegenusMlcropephls isdescribed and
illustrated under thenameof M. 1・ouge,nontl, fromRuili (Juili) in Yunnan Province,
SouthwestChina.
OnlytwospeciesbelongingtothegenusMicropeplushavehithertobeenreported
fromChinabyWATANABEandLUo(1991,pp93,94)basedonthespecimensobtained
ontheTian-muMountainsinZhejiangProvince,EastChina.
ThroughthecourtesyofMr.G.DERoUGEMoNT, London, Ihaverecentlyhad
anopportunitytoexamine.aninterestingspeciesof thegenusMicropeplusobtained
byhimselfatRuili(Juili)inYunnanProvince,SouthwestChina. Itseemstobelong
to thegroupof M. pc,・catusfor thereasonofhavingfivekeelsoneachelytronand
verycoarsepuncturesontheinterspacesofkeels.Afteracarefulexamination,however,
ithasbecomeclear that thespeciesisnew tosciencebecauseofdisagreementwith
theknowncongenersin thesurfacesculptureofheadandconfiguration ofthemale
genitalorgan. Itwillbedescribedandillustratedinthepresentpaper. Theholotype
and four paratypes of the new species to be described are deposited in G. DE
RoUGEMoNT'sprivatecollection, theallotypeand fourparatypesinthecollectionof
theLaboratoryofEntomology,TokyoUniversityofAgriculture,andtheremaining
oneparatypeinthecollectionoftheAcademiaSinica,Beijing,China.

Bodylength: 1.8-1.9mm(fromfrontmarginofheadtoanalend);1.1-1.2mm
(from frontmarginofhead toelytra1apices).
Bodybroadovalandconvex.Colourreddishbrowntoblackishbrown,shining,

except for headandpronotumsubopaque, withmouth parts, antennaeand le9S
yellowish,bothsidesofpronotumandapicalpartsofelytrayellowishbrown.
Male. Headsubtriangularandconsiderablybroaderacrosscompoundeyesthan
long(width/length=1.73);clypeo-fronta1partproducedforwards,roundedanddis-
tinctlyreflexedinanteriormargin,surfacedepressedaboveandimpunctate,though
coveredalloverwithcoriaceousgroundsculpture;lateralsidesfeeblyarcuatethough
slightly emarginate behind the middle and distinctly bordered, anterior margin
semicircularlyemarginateandfinelybordered;surfaceuneven, impunctate, though
coveredwith similar ground sculpture to that on clypeo-fronta1part,somewhat
depressedinfrontalareaanddeeplyfoveolateoneachsideofmiddlejustbeforethe
base,providedwithapairofdistinctcarinae,eachofwhichistwo-forkedinposterior
half; compound eyessomewhat prominent and coarsely faceted. Antennaeshort,
usuallyrecedingontotheundersideofpronotumfor theirreception,allthesegments
polishedexcept forsetoseapicalpartofapicalmostsegment;1stenlargedanddilated
apicad, a little longer than broad (length/width=1.25), 2nd abruptly narrowed
apicad,somewhat longer thanbroad (length/width=1.33), thougha littleshorter
(2nd/1st=0.80) andnarrower (2nd/1st=0.75) than1st,3rdand4thequal inboth
lengthandwidthtoeachother,eachelongate,morethan2.5timesaslongasbroad,
5thoblongandtwiceaslongasbroad,asbroadasbutsomewhatshorter(5th/4th=0.75)
than4th,6thabout15timesaslongasbroad,asbroadasbutapparentlyshorter
(6th/5th=0.77) than5th,7thas longasbroad,alittleshorter (7th/6th=0.87) but
somewhat broader (7th/6th=1.33) than 6th, 8th distinctly transverse (width/
length=1.67), alittleshorter (8th/7th-0.75)butsomewhatbroader(8th/9th=1.25)
than 7th, apicalmost globular and largest, slightly longer than broad (length/
width=1.17),muchlonger(apicalmost/8th=4.67)thanandnearly2.5timesasbroad
as8th,narrowlyroundedattheapex,whichissetigerous.
Pronotum convex medially and subtrapezoida1, strongly transverse (width/
length=2.34)andconsiderablybroader thanhead(pronotum/head=1.79),widestat
base,abruptlynarrowedanteriadinanteriorhalfthoughslightlyorhardlynarrowed
posteriad in posterior half, lateral marginalmoststraight inanterior half though
slightly arcuateor nearlystraight in posterior half, anterior marginbroadly and
shallowlyemarginate,posteriormarginbisinuate,somewhatproducedbackwardsand
broadlyroundedatmiddle;anterioranglesbluntlyroundedandsomewhatproduced
forwards,posterioronesnearlyrectangular;lateralpartseachdistinctlyandsomewhat
broadlyexplanate,providedwithashallowdepressionbeforeandbehind themiddle,
respectively,surfaceofthispartimpunctate,thoughuniformlycoriaceousasonhead;
medianpart providedwithsixcellsenclosedbycostae, threeinanteriorhalfand the
remainingthreeinposteriorhalf,surfaceofeachcelldistinctlydepressedandcovered
withcoriaceousgroundsculptureason lateralparts.Scutellum relatively largeand
subtriangular, covered with finecoriaceousgroundsculptureon thesurface. Elytra
subquadrateandelevatedmedially, apparently transverse(width/length=1.38) and
distinctly longer (elytra/pronotum=1.72) than but almost as broad as pronotum,

slightlydilatedapicad, abruptly and transverselydepressed inapical fourth along
posteriormargin;eachelytronprovidedwithfivelongitudinalkeels,onesutural,three
discal and onehumeral, inner threekeelseachextending through thewholelength,
fourth keel abbreviatedat posterior fourth; interspaceof the keels with irregular
longitudinalrowsoflargeandsomewhatcontiguouspunctures,1stand2ndinterspaces
eachwith twoor threerows,3rdwiththreerowsinbasalhalfbut tworowsinapical
half;4thwithonerow;epipleura1keelstronglyandarcuately raised,pseudepipleura1
keelpresentbetweenepipleura1andhumeralkeels,nearlystraightandabbreviatedin
front, interspacebetweenepipleura1and pseudepipleura1 keels with two rows of
punctures, which are irregularly arranged; interspace between humeral and
pseudepipleura1keelswitharowofcoarsepunctures.
Abdomenrelativelyshort,graduallynarrowedapicad;surfaceofeachtergiteim-
punctate,thoughcoveredwithcoriaceousgroundsculpture,basal fourvisibletergites
eachtransverselydepressedinbasalhalfandprovidedwiththreestronglongitudinal
keelswhicharenearly parallelandequidistant;1stvisiblesterniteprovidedwitha
pairoflongitudinal keelsatthemiddleandevidentlytransverselydepressedbetween
thesekeels,visible2ndto4thsterniteseachwith fourlongitudinalkeelsoneachlateral

side, theoutermostkeelextendingthroughoutandmuchlonger thantheinner three
ones,whichareabbreviatedinposteriorhalf;preapica1sterniteshallowlyemarginate
at themiddleofposteriormargin,providedwithavaguearcuatecarinain frontof
theemarginationandsomewhatdepressedonthespacebetweensemicircularcarina
andemargination;precedingsternitebroadlysemicircularlyemarginateat themiddle
ofposteriormargin. Legsrelativelyshort,metatibiaslightlyemarginateinposterior
third of innerside.
Genitalorganelongateandsymmetrical.Medianlobeelongate,graduallytapered
towardstheapex which isnarrowly rounded,stronglycurvedventrad inposterior

halfasseenfromlateralside;parameresslenderandfusedwithmedianlobe,slightly
shorterthanmedianlobe,eachprovidedwithtwoveryfinesetaeat theapicalpart.
Female. Similar ingeneralappearancetothemale, thoughdiffering fromthe
latterinlackingtheemarginationofabdominalpreapica1sterniteandsimplemetatibia.
Typeseries. Holotype: , allotype: Ruili (Juili),YunnanProv.,Southwest

China,4-II-1993,G.DERoUGEMoNTleg.Paratypes:8 2 ,samedataasfor the

Distribution. Southwest China(YunnanProv).
Notes. ThepresentnewspeciesbelongstothegroupofM.porcatusinhaving
fivekeelsoneachelytronandverycoarsepuncturesontheinterspacesbetween the
keels,but itdiffersfromthecongenersinthegroundsculptureontheuppersurface
ofheadandconfigurationofmalegenitalia.
ThespecificnameofthisnewspeciesisgivenafterMr.GuillaumeDERouGEMoNT,
London,whoofferedhisinterestingspecimenstomeforstudy.
要 約
渡辺泰明:中国雲南省から採集されたチビハネカクシ属の1新種. - チビハネカクシ属に含まれ
る種として, これまでに中国から報告されているのは, WATANABE&Luo(1991)による浙江省からの
2種に過ぎない.最近, 筆者は, ロンドン在住のGuillaumeDERouGEMoNT氏のご好意によって, 同氏
が中国雲南省西部の瑞麗で採集された本属の1種を検討する機会に恵まれた. そこで, この種を詳細
に検討した結果, 新種と判定されたので下記のとおり命名・記載した.
MicropeplusrougemontiY.WATANABE,spnov.
この種は,上翅のそれぞれに5本の顕著な縦隆条が存在すること, そしてそれらの隆条間の点刻が
きわめて粗造であることなどから, M.porcatus種群に含まれることが一見して明らかである. しかし
ながら, 頭部表面の構造, 雄の後脛節に表われる第二次性徴と雄交尾器の形状などによって, このグ
ループの他種からは容易に区別することができる.
なお,種名は本種の採集者であり,かつ筆者に研究の機会を與えられたG.DERouGEMoNT氏に献名
したものである.
