Abstract ThefirstmemberofthescydmaenidgenusHot・aeon1o,philsScHAuFuss
foundtooccurinVietnamisdescribed,underthenameH.111esa1ossp nov.Importantdi-
agnostic characters, including theaedeagusand spermatheca, are illustrated. The new
speciesiscomparedtoAsiaticcongeners,basedonthetypematerialofallOrientaland
Himalayanspeciesofrio,-aeo,noph1l.・l.

Introduction
MembersofHo1aeomophus(Scydmaeninae,Cyrtoscydmini)areknowntooccur
intheOrientalRegion,Australia,NewCaledonia,Madagascar andMauritius(NEW-
TON& FRANZ, 1998;JALoszYNsKI,2002, 2003). InAsia,speciesof Horaeomorphus
inhabittheMalayPeninsulaandArchipelago(sixspecies),Nepal(twospecies),Thai-
land(onespecies),mainlandChina, TaiwanandJapan (eachcountry withasingle
species,JA.LoszYNsKI,2002,2003).
In thispaper, theoccurrenceof Horaeomorphus inVietnam is reported for the
first time. Specimens collected in thenorthernpart of the country, inNinh Binh
Province,turnedouttobelongtoanundescribedspecies,asprovedbyacomparisonto
the typematerial of all Asiaticmembersof thegenus. Thisnew taxon isdescribed
belowasHoraeomorphusmosaicssp nov;thetypematerial isdepositedintheInsti-
tuteofEcologyandBiologicalResources,Hanoi,Vietnam(IEBR),NationalScience
Museum, Tokyo, Japan (NSMT), and the private collection of the first author,
Wioclawek,Poland(PCPJ).Comparativematerial fromthe followingcollectionswas
used in thepresentstudy: DeutscheEntomo1ogische Institut, Eberswalde, Naturhis-

Taxonomy
Horaeomorp1lusmosaicssp nov.
(Figs.1,2A-E)
Diagnosis. Thisspeciescanbedistinguished fromallAsiaticcongenersbythe
followingsetofcharacters: body ofmoderatesize;pronotumfinely punctate; elytra
widestanteriortomiddle,withdistinctpunctures,especiallylargeanddenseinslightly
impressedadsutura1areainanterior third;lackofexternalsexualdimorphism. Exami-
nationofaedeagusisnecessaryforidentification.
Description. Body slender, attened, moderately dark brown with slightly
lighterlegsandpalpi,setationyellowish.
Male(Fig.1). Bodylength186mm.Headslightlywider thanlong,widestat
largeeyes,length0.3mm,width0.4mm.Temperamoderatelylong,convergentposte-
riorly,inanterior3/4regularlyrounde thenrapidlybenttowardoccipitalconstriction;
vertex over twiceas wideas long,convex, withapair ofshallow, relativelysmall
foveae,eachadjacenttopostero-interna1marginofprominentsupraantennaltubercle;
fronssubtrapezoidaI, convex.Punctationsparseand fine;setation relatively sparse,
moderatelylong,suberecttoerect.Antenna0.79mminlength,graduallythickenedto-
wardapex,asshowninFig 2A.
Pronotumslightly longer thanwide,widestnearanterior fourth,length0.56mm,
maximum width 0.52mm, width at base 0.41mm. Anterior and lateral margins
roundedtogether;narrowbasalcollardelimitedfromdiscbyatransverse,slightly im-
pressedrowoffivesmallpits;basenearlystraight.Punctationsparseandfine;setation
moderatelydenseandlong,suberecttoerect.
Elytraoval,slightlyflattened,widestjustbeforeanterior thir length1mm,width
1.43mm,elytra1index(EI; length/width) 1.43. Humeri relativelywell marked,each
withshallowandbroadinternalhumeral impression,verynarrowadsuturalareainan-
terior 1/6raisedanddelimitedbysharpedge,broadovalmedianareanear anterior
thirddistinctly attene apicesofelytraroundedtogether;scutellumnotvisible.Punc-
tationinbasal t/5relativelyfineandsparse,thenpuncturesincreasinginsize, largest
on atareainanterior third,inposteriorhalfpuncturesgraduallyreducinginsize, in
posterior third shallow and indistinct. Setation moderately dense and long, setae
slightly longer but distinctly thicker than onpronotum. Hind wingswell developed,
abouttwiceaslongaselytra.
Legs moderately long, relatively robust. Trochanters not modified; all femora
moderatelystrongly clavate; tibiaerecurved, widest betweenmiddleanddistal third,
pro-andespeciallymesotibiaewithdensesetal rowindistalhalfofinternalmargin;
tarsiwithtarsomeresI-IVslightlydecreasinginsize,VaslongasIII-IVtogether.

Aedeagus (Fig 2B-D) 0.35mm in length, relativelyslender, withmedian lobe
stronglynarrowingtowardroundedapex,inlateralviewapexonlyslightlycurvedven-
trally;subtrapezoida1ventralpartofbaseseparatedfrommedianlobe;parameres1ong,
minimallyexceedingapexofmedianlobe,slender,withveryshortapicalsetae; inter-
nalarmaturerelativelycomplicated,symmetrical,composedofdarklysclerotized cen-
tralcomplexsurroundedbylighter,elongatelobes.
Female. Bodylength1.81-1.84mm, lengthofhead0.3mm,widthofhead0.4
mm,lengthofantenna0.77mm,lengthofpronotum0.52-0.55mm,maximumwidth

distinctcircularopening, andwith thick,subcylindrica1ductwithrelativelycompli-
cate entangleddistalpart.Bursacopulatrixnotfound.

Etymology. The newspeciesislittlecharacteristicandhasbodyofmedium
size,withnoparticular characters.This featureisunderlinedby thespecificepithet
“ｵgσα10.,” (mosaics),inGreekmeaning“intermediate,medium,middle”.
Remalks. Ho1-aeomorphusmesa1osismostsimilarto ri. sarawakensisFRANZ;
bothspecieshavesimilarbodyshapeandsize.Apart fromdistinctdifferencesinthe
designoftheaedeagus,thenewspeciescanbedistinguishedbyhavingveryfinepunc-
tationonthepronotumandlargeranddenserpuncturesonthecentralpartofelytra;

basethan lateral foveae(all foveaeinonelineinH nlesa1os). Horaeomorphuspunc-
tatlssimusFRANZis larger andhas very distinct, largepuncturesonpronotum and
muchstronglycurvedmetatibiae;H.1oeblianusFRANZalsohaslargerbodywithmore
convexpronotumandelytra,andwithverycharacteristic,densesetationofposterior
partofpronotum(muchsparser inH. filoselles); H.、,aldepunctatus FRANZ hasdis-
tinctlybroaderpronot、lm,muchstrongernarrowingtowardstrikinglynarrowbase.Ho-
t・aeomorphusmesaiosisthefirstspeciesofthegenusknowntooccurinVietnam;the
typeserieswascollectedbysiftingarottenwood.

P.JALoszYNsK1・野付周平:北ベトナム産トゲアシオオコケムシ属の1新種 (コウチュウ目コ
ケムシ科). - 北ベトナム, ニンビン省クッフンの朽木中から発見されたトケ'アシオオコケ
ムシ属の一種を, 東洋区およびヒマラヤ地域産の同属の種と比較検討した結果, 新種であると
認められため, rio・,ace,no,ph,Is,nesa,osspnov.と命名, 記載した.
