The Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Analysis is pleased to present Facts
& Figures 2015-2016. This is the 36th edition of the UAB factbook, the seventeenth
edition available electronically on the web. Facts & Figures is compiled by the
Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Analysis but reflects contributions from
offices all over campus. We remain grateful for our contributors’ continued
assistance.

Vision:
An internationally renowned research university – a first choice for education and
health care.
Mission:
UAB is a research university and academic health center that discovers, teaches
and applies knowledge for the intellectual, cultural, social and economic benefit
of Birmingham, the state and beyond.
Overarching Mission Pillars:
I: Education
Provide education that prepares diverse students to lead, teach, provide
professional services and become the prominent scholars and societal leaders of
the future.
II: Research
Pursue research, scholarship, and creative activities that spurs innovation, make
UAB a vibrant cultural center, and expands UAB’s capability to continually
discover and share new knowledge that benefits society.
III: Patient Care
Deliver the highest quality patient care that reflects our ability to translate
discoveries into revolutionary therapies in one of the nation’s largest academic
medical centers.
IV: Community Service
Encourage partnerships that improve education, the arts and humanities, health,
economic prosperity and quality of life through service at home and around the
globe.
V: Economic Development
Foster and stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship that contributes to the
economic development and prosperity of the city of Birmingham, the state of
Alabama and beyond.
The UAB vision and mission were approved by the Board of Trustees on February 6, 2004.
