This book is dedicated to the memory of author, professor, and pilgrimage scholar
Lesley D. Harman
16 February 1956–28 December 2019
Lesley D. Harman was a professor of Sociology at King’s University College at Western University,
London, Ontario, Canada. Deeply committed to the twin fields of sociology and pilgrimage studies,
Lesley authored several works, including The Modern Stranger: On Language and Membership (Mouton
de Gruyter, 1987); When a Hostel Becomes a Home: Experiences of Women (Garamond, 1988); and We
Are Never Alone: Healing Lessons from the Camino (Ursus, 2009). In addition, Lesley edited A Sociology
of Pilgrimage: Embodiment, Identity, Transformation (Ursus, 2014), and co-edited The Many Voices of
Pilgrimage and Reconciliation (CABI, 2017). In her professional life, teaching gave her a platform to
explore her ideas, and interaction with students stoked her fires.
Lesley had a concern for those less fortunate and those who took different directions. Her chosen
field enabled her to study homelessness, gender politics, the nature of “the stranger,” and most

recently, pilgrimage. She walked and worked on the paths of the Camino de Santiago; those d irections
led to conferences and publications.
Lesley D. Harman touched the lives of many: beloved family members, students, colleagues,
world travelers, and pilgrims. She possessed a compassionate interest in the lives of others, a willing-
ness to listen, and most of all, a warm sense of humor. She will be remembered for her commitment
to the adage, “There are no strangers; only friends we’ve never met.”
Rest in peace, dear sister, mother, mentor, colleague, pilgrim, and friend.

Sharenda Holland Barlar  is a senior lecturer of Spanish at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois,
where she directs Wheaton in Spain and the Pilgrimage to Santiago summer programs. She has
published several articles on Santiago de Compostela pilgrimages in which she discusses the trans-
formative process of pilgrimage. She has contributed chapters on pilgrimage to Pilgrimage as
Transformative Process: the Movement from Fractured to Integrated  (Brill/Rodopi, 2018) and The Rout-

Maryjane Dunn is an associate professor of Spanish at Henderson State University, Arkadelphia,
Arkansas. She has followed the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela both personally (first walk-
ing the Camino Francés in 1979) and professionally in her scholarly work. Her current published
works have followed many paths: (i) compiling an annotated bibliography of pilgrimage studies;
(ii) comparing the differences between “real” medieval and modern pilgrims; (iii) examining
literary depictions of pilgrimage by 19th-century women writers; and (iv) producing English
translations of Books I, II, and III of the medieval Codex Calixtinus. E-mail: [email protected]
Susan Dunn-Hensley is a visiting assistant professor of English literature at Wheaton College,
Wheaton, Illinois. She is author of Anna of Denmark and Henrietta Maria: Virgins, Witches, and
Catholic Queens (Palgrave MacMillan, 2017). Her publications include journal articles and book
chapters on queenship and on pilgrimage. Dunn-Hensley is currently working on a book project
exploring the impact of the English Reformation on literary representations of female power in the

Shirley du Plooy is a senior lecturer in anthropology at the University of the Free State, Bloemfon-
tein Campus, South Africa. Working primarily with Sesotho-speaking groups in the Eastern Free
State and Lesotho, her work falls within the intersecting ambits of pilgrimaging, traditional health
and health care, and rites of passage. Her theoretical contributions emphasize the entangled and
enmeshed ways of knowing and being in more than human worlds. E-mail: [email protected]
Vivienne Keely spent most of her adult life in Sydney, Australia, where she taught church history
at the Catholic Institute of Sydney and St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox College. She served as a re-
searcher for the Roman Catholic diocese of Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia, and as a
co-editor of Pilgrimage in Practice: Narration, Reclamation and Healing (CABI, 2018). Vivienne’s
most recent publication is Michael Hayes: the Life of a Wexford Rebel in Sydney (Anchor Press,
Australia, 2019). Now semi-retired and living in Dublin, she hopes to pursue her interest in
