Children in Ukraine start going to school at the
age of 6 or 7. They go to primary school. When
they are 10 or 11 years old they go to secondary
school. Ukrainian pupils finish school at the age
of 16 or 17 and enter the university or college.
There are 5 or 6 schooldays every week. School
starts at 8:30 in the morning. Each lesson is 45
minutes and pupils have 5 to 7 lessons a day.
Ukrainian pupils learn subjects like Native and
Foreign Language, Geography, Nature Study,
History, Maths, Computer Science, Music and
Art, PE and many others. After lessons, pupils
can take various hobby groups such as drama,
art, dancing or sport activities.

Hi! My name’s Andriy and I’m from Kiev, Ukraine. This is my daily schedule.
I usually wake up at about 7 a.m. in the morning. It’s often very cold in Kyiv, so it’s difficult
to get up. I get dressed and then I have breakfast. I usually have a sandwich, eggs and tea,
it’s my favourite. Then, my dad drives me to school.
I go to the 42nd school in Kiev. I’m eleven years old and I’m in form 5.
My school is close, so it only takes me ten minutes to get there. I usually
meet my friends in the playground before school and we chat.

Ukraine is located in the Eastern Europe
on the crossroads of the ways from Asia
to Europe. In the north, it borders on
Belorus, in the east and north east on
Russia, in the south west its neighbours
are Hungary, Romania and Moldova, in
the west - Poland and Slovakia. In the
south Ukraine is washed by the Black
Sea and the Sea of Azov Its territory is
more than 603 000 square kilometers.
The population of Ukraine is 46 million.
Official language is Ukrainian. Russian
is also widely spoken. The capital
city is Kyiv. It’s located on the Dnipro
River. There are also a lot of big cities
in Ukraine, such as Kharkiv, Donetsk,
Chernihiv, Odesa, Lviv and others.
Ukraine occupies only 0.45% of
the planet’s dry land, but about 5%
of the world’s mineral resources are
concentrated here. There are large
deposits of coal, iron ore, oil, gas. It
is also rich in graphite, native sulphur,
rock salt etc.
Most of the territory is flat. Basic
physical-geographical zones are: mixed-forest (Polissya), forest-steppe and steppe. The mountains are
in the west (the Carpathian Mnts) and in the south (the Crimean Mnts). They are not high. The highest
peaks are Hoverla in the Carpathians (2,061 m) and Roman Kosh in the Crimean Mountains (1,545m).
The main rivers are the Danube, the Desna, the Buh, the Siversky
Donets, the Tisza.
The longest river of Ukraine is the Dnipro (2,285 km) which flows
into the Black Sea. It divides Ukraine into Right-bank and Left-
bank territories.
The climate of Ukraine is mostly continental and only on the
southern shore of Crimea it is subtropical.
