DAN AND HIS QUILLS

Across the table from us Dan De Quille is writing one of his abominable locals, and we have been studying his face. Of late he has thrown away his pencils and 
procured old­fashioned quill pens. He never passes a produce store now without casting furtive glances around to see if there is not a goose or turkey or some other 
bird convenient, from which he can surreptitiously extract a quill. He writes ordinary locals with a turkey quill; for important affairs, like runaways, and dog fights, he 
takes a goose quill; for obituary notices he keeps the plume of a raven; for mining reviews nothing will do but a swan's quill. His scientific articles are fashioned by the 
quill of an owl; while for the dreadful legends he strings together for Sunday's Enterprise nothing will answer but a feather from the pinion of an eagle or an albatross. 
It is unnecessary to ask him any more what the nature of his theme for the moment may be. A glance at the pen in his hand reveals the whole thing, for his pens are 
graded. The dry statement, the magnified trifle, the thrilling occurrence, the advertiser's puff, the moderate falsehood embellished, the outrageous astonisher, etc. all 
have their respective pens. We quizzed Dan at first to find out why he had thrown off upon his old friend, the pencil, and accused him of having acquired metropolitan 
ideas during his visit East; told him it was a vain desire, notwithstanding his new book, to try to wrap himself up in the drapery of literature; that all the ink, dressing 
gowns and quill pens in the universe would not conceal him or stop the children of Virginia City from calling out to him: "How are you, Dan?" as he met them in the 
street. He blushed in attempting to deny that any motive of egotism or vanity had actuated him, and quoted for our benefit the line which begins: "O why should the 
spirit of mortal be proud?" He overwhelmed us with a dissertation on the degeneration of modern graphite, declaring that it was always too hard or too soft, and was 
never found now without grit in it. We permitted him to think he had convinced us, but he did not, and we know all about his reasons for the change. There are times 
when we all have spells of looking back; times when hope fails us or seems to paint pictures less bright than those of memory. Dan is having one of those spells now. 
His array of pens have to him a significance which he thinks exultingly that we cannot fathom. But we know all about it. Every one represents a lovely girl who Dan 
used to sharpen

pencils for years ago in some primitive western schoolhouse. One means a rosy face, dark eyes and a smile which was wont to make all the boys in school crazy. And 
while Dan holds that pen he thinks that sunny face was hid beneath a coffin lid years ago, and while he writes his heart is crying for the beautiful girl who is dead. 
Another means a blonde whose golden curls have touched Dan's cheek in dreams for years, and whose low voice has rung in his ears a thousand times when the 
world believed he had no thought in his mind except to describe correctly the overturning of a load of hay or to relate the minutiae of a bar­room fight. The pen with 
which he writes his outrageous falsehoods is the big girl that put snow down his back in school and told him with grave face that it was his sweetheart who did it. And 
there he sits and writes, and smiles sometimes, and then grows sober and changes his pen and thinks we do not penetrate his secret. Who would have dreamed of any 
deception in quaint, candid, honest old Dan?
