This volume brings together in one compass the Orthodox
churchesoftheecumenicalpatriarchate–theRussian,Armenian,
Ethiopian,EgyptianandSyrianchurches.Itfollowstheirfortunes
fromthelateMiddleAgesuntilmoderntimes–exactlytheperiod
whentheirhistoryhasbeenmostneglected.Inevitably,thisempha-
sisesdifferencesinteachingsandexperience,butitalsobringsout
commonthreads,mostnotablytheresiliencedisplayedintheface
ofalienandoftenhostilepoliticalregimes.Thecentralthemeof
thisvolumeisthesurvivalagainsttheoddsofOrthodoxyinits
manyformsintothemodernera.ThelastphaseofByzantium
provestohavebeensurprisinglyimportantinthissurvival.Itpro-
videdOrthodoxywiththeintellectual,artisticandspiritualreserves
tomeetlaterchallenges.ThecontinuingvitalityoftheOrthodox
churchesisevidentforexampleintheSundaySchoolMovement
inEgyptandtheZoe¨brotherhoodinGreece.
