PRESIDENT

B
y the time this edition of TX2
hits the clubhouse bar every
man jack will be aware that
there’s a `no-handicapper`
loose on the fairways, a new
Station Commanding Officer who is
also the new JSGC [D] Club
President. Having just arrived on
Station the non-golfer, Lt Col Tony
Donohue, will no doubt be up to
his neck with important issues such
as golf lessons, clubs, bag and

trolley choices. As well as that old
chestnut “work”. The Club Chairman, Richard Wright, understandably
suggested that it would be unfair for TX2 to press Tony for a contribution
at this current moment in time, but to use his “Bio” to satisfy our
Membership’s curiosity. So, with no further ado …
T
ony joined the Army as a Junior Leader in the Kings Division in 1980,
before joining The 1st Battalion The KINGS Regiment in 1981
stationed in Osnabruck, West Germany.

During his career as a soldier, he instructed at the Royal Military Academy
Sandhurst, conducted numerous operations in Northern Ireland
culminating with the appointment as the Second in Command of the
Close Observation Platoon in South Armagh. He was to be selected as the
Regimental Sergeant Major of 1 KINGS and was successful on application
and duly received his Late Entry Commission in 2003.
Since commissioning, his junior Regimental Duty (RD) appointments have
been Welfare Officer and Divisional Career Management Officer, for the
Kings Division at the Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow. On return to RD,
he was the Motor Transport Officer followed by Quartermaster Technical
serving with 1 LANCS on operations in Iraq. Subsequently Quartermaster
(QM) of 2 LANCS, which included deployments as part of the Theatre
Reserve Battalion on Operation Herrick 11 and 12.

Tony was posted to 15 Brigade, firstly as the Training Major of Sheffield
University Officer Training Corps and then latterly as the QM of the newly
created Yorkshire Officer Training Regiment. He completed 2 tours as
Headquarters Company Commander, firstly serving with 2 YORKS in
Cyprus and then 1 LANCS in Catterick. He has recently completed 18
months as the Deputy Chief of Staff in Headquarters The School of
Infantry. Tony was promoted to Lt Col in 2015 and in his 35 years’ service
has served in West Germany, Falkland Islands, Northern Ireland, Canada,
Cyprus, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Tony is married to Beverley and have two grown up children, Gemma (30)
who is married with three children and Anthony (22) who is studying at
Leeds University. Tony’s interests are walking and most sports.

On behalf of all the Club members, we wish Tony and Beverly the best of
tours at Dhekelia. [N.B. [I would have thought that bit of snivel should
have earned me a couple of beers?! Ed].

CAPTAIN’S [CLUBHOUSE GROUNDS] WORKDAY

A couple of weeks prior, Eifion Jones [the T&T Chairman] in association with Alan Banks [the
House Member] challenged the Clutch with a “call to arms” to give some of their valuable time
and effort to blitzing the grounds and gardens around the Clubhouse that had become tired and
weary through the winter months. With the Club Manager, Chris Harper’s approval, Eifion’s
request quickly manifested into an email to the Club Membership inviting volunteers to join them
in this quest. Come the allotted date, early Wednesday 10 February 2016, the response was, to
say the least, hugely impressive with more than 20 Members from both the Gents and Ladies
Section. The Club Capt. Ned Miller who led by example, quickly rolled up his sleeves and got stuck
in, as pointed out by Eifion, that demonstrated a youthful, agile and manly strength that must
have reminded more than few senior members of the days when they could pick the ball out of
the hole without an involuntary groan or expletive. Some 20 trailer loads of flora, trees, prunings
and composting leaves were taken away. The locker room was also given a much needed blitz and
makeover. A number of Ladies graciously provided everyone with food and drink courtesy of the
Club. Although not completely finished, the benefit of their labour is strikingly obvious. Another
sprucing event is planned to take place prior to the Club’s annual Festival of Golf [15 – 24 April
2016]. During the Workday Jan Mernelius had the foresight to take a few photographs to share
with TX2. And here are those pictures …

THE CLUB GOLF SHOP.
The Editor asked if I had any input to TX2 from the Shop perspective. I have - there
has been no change! The volunteers in myself, by default Linda and the last resort,
John Henry, continue to open ‘all hours’ to satisfy the smallest of needs. My thanks to
the pair of them for deputising when I am not available.

The Shop has started stocking dimpled golf shoes in anticipation of the change to
‘grass’. Currently there are limited numbers (8) to see if they sell. These were bought
at greatly reduced UK prices which may not be repeatable from my source, however
…….. we’ll see how they go before committing to more.

The new, planned to be logo’d Glenmuir shirts, seem to be well received with Vikla
ladies ordering a good number for their club, our logo omitted of course. They come
in vibrant colours and may currently be bought without logo as I am seeking an
alternate embroiderer. IF you know of any, please let me know.

There are NUMEROUS second hand Member’s clubs in the Shop at the moment
looking for a new home. Feel free to come and inspect, test drive and haggle before
buying. Quality putters abound, from Odyssey to Ping, even to Scotty Cameron!
Some can even hit the ball from beyond the Brown!!!

Accessories – for those (few?) that practice
regularly, we now stock the range mat
practice tees, ie 3 different heights also, the
ball marker tool for putting your ‘brand’ on
the ball so that when misplaced, someone
might return it to you! Or of course, re-
brand it. IF they have the tool!!
… Enough.

A final reminder that all profits from Shop
sales go back into the Club coffers.

A Quarter of a Year with the &

he Christmas Blue Wave Party was once again a resounding success being heartily
supported by The Clutch, the Ladies Section and other Club Members, many of whom
celebrated unthinkable acts in a style we have become accustomed to expect at this
event. The party was yet again voted “THE CHRISTMAS EVENT OF THE YEAR”.

any new competitions have been introduced into the T&T this Golfing year,
starting with the Autumn Challenge that was kindly sponsored by Angelo
Calodoucas and Hans Berger. The results were announced at T&T Christmas
party with the prizes being presented to George Savva [Winner], myself [Runner Up]
and Peter Woodcock [3rd place] by the Club Chairman Capt. Richard Wright.

ovember 2016 kicked off with a highly
competitive Match Play Challenge against
the Ladies Section. The competition was
gratefully sponsored by Sharon and Peter
Woodcock. Suffice to say, the Ladies were allowed
to win?! A special mention must be made of John
Seymour (just call me Jane) who made up the
numbers for the ladies.

n early February we introduced an In House
Challenge between the Younger and the Older
T&T Members, with 70 being the cut off?!
Following a very deep and soul-searching attempt to

name the two groups, we eventually agreed on “The T&T v The Ladies Section

ebruary 16th heralded the first Gents Invitation Valentine Greensomes, which
was a sell-out with all available Ladies participating. It was also a colourful show
with the Ladies in Pink and the Clutch in Red. The winners were Carole and
Mike Short, with Sue and Tony Walsh Runners Up, closely followed by Margrit and
Noel in 3rd place. This Competition was generously sponsored by Joyce and Malcolm
Newell with Joyce doing her magic setting out the prize table which was a real treat
for the men. I would like to take this opportunity to extend our boundless thanks to
WO2 John Goldsmith [Goldie] for the huge trays of sandwiches. Someone needs to
remind him that as we get older our appetite shrinks.
