This book is a partial revision of the doctoral dissertation I defended in 2010 at the
Universities of Pavia and Leuven. I wish to express my deepest gratefulness to
Prof. Rudolf Bernet and Prof. Silvana Borutti, who thoughtfully supervised this
work, offered me their precious advices, and encouraged me to turn the dissertation
into a book. During my stay in Leuven, I benefi ted from many discussions with

I am deeply indebted to many friends and colleagues, who have supported me
in this enterprise. I owe special thanks to Andrea Altobrando for having read and
commented several sections of this work. Although we still have divergent opinions
on many issues, his philosophical commitment and his challenging criticisms
prompted me, hopefully with some success, to refi ne my own positions. For their
advices concerning the relationship between Husserl’s and Kant’s philosophies,
