As LGBTQ claims acquire global relevance, how do sexual politics impact the
study of International Relations (IR)? This book argues that LGBTQ perspectives
are not only an inherent part of world politics but can also influence IR theory
making.
LGBTQ politics have simultaneously gained international prominence in the
past decade, achieving significant policy change, and have provoked cultural resis
tance and policy pushbacks. Sexualities in World Politics responds to the call for
more empirically motivated but also critical scholarship on this important subject.
Gathering scholars from different political venues, geographical regions, and sub
fields of IR—from area studies to development and political sociology, the book
offers comparative case-studies from regional, cultural and theoretical peripheries to
identify ways of rethinking IR. Outlining and analysing previously unrecognized
perspectives in an accessible manner, the book asks what contribution LGBTQ
politics can provide for conceiving the political subject, as well as the international
structure in which activism is embedded.
Seeking to mainstream sexuality debates in the fields of international relations
and politics, it will be essential reading for students and scholars of gender politics,
cultural studies and international relations theory.
Manuela Lavinas Picq is Professor of International Relations at Universidad San
Francisco de Quito, Ecuador.
Markus Thiel is Associate Professor at Florida International University, USA.
