Am Beginn des mit Nachdruck betriebenen Aneignungsprojektes stand 1912 die ,,Verschwunden ist die Arena von Olympia and “.Der Ruckgang auf die griechische und romische Antike bildete fur Borchardt zeit seines Lebens das Fundament aller Bemuhungen um eine Wiederbelebung des alteuropaischen Kulturerbes. Zugleich profilierte Borchardt jedoch auch verschiedene nachantike Epochen als klassische Perioden, wobei sich normative und stiltypologische Bestimmungen wechselseitig uberlagerten. Fur Borchardts Orientierung an klassischen Kulturepochen waren Johann Wolfgang Goethe und August Wilhelm Schlegel wichtige Gewahrsleute. Eine vergleichbare Bedeutung attestierte er erst wieder seinen Zeitgenossen Stefan George und Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
