opened the floodgates of memory and put me on the path to writing a book
(always had that on my bucket list).

Mom, impeccable cook and graceful recipient of left-handed compliments
from a teenage me: “If you weren’t such a great cook, I’d be skinnier.”
Dad, the original foodie with a flair for creating delicacies from scratch, and
who has passed on to me his resourcefulness and love of food.
My husband and culinary muse, Ashish, whose silent, practical support for
this project in the form of a superb laptop as a surprise gift spoke volumes.
My brother, Nikhil, critic numero uno, who still remembers a certain
disastrous butter chicken experiment that I’d rather forget, and expresses
mock disbelief that his sister actually learned how to cook.
My daughter, Aria, whose arrival inspired kid-friendly cooking
explorations.
The succession of housemaids and nannies, who literally gave me the gift
of time to write this book, sometimes with attitude.
My mother-in-law, who introduced me to amazingly easy South Indian
breakfast foods and time-saving tips.
My father-in-law, whose famous sweet tooth is the reason I occasionally
venture into desserts.
Legions of friends and cousins, who have always been a pleasure to cook

My gorgeous golden retriever, Maya, who snoozed companionably by my

Roomies/Foodies is the result of relentless effort by Meg and I to thread together
the nostalgic, humorous stories behind our culinary inventions during our
graduate school days into a one-of-a-kind cookbook and guide for international
students. I appreciate Meg’s persistence, insight, and flair for writing that helped
materialise a nascent idea I had into a book. I am truly grateful to her for her
