In October 1954 Ho Chi Minh returned to Hanoi, after eight years in
the jungle, to set up a socialist state in the north of Vietnam. In April
1985 a 200 000-strong parade through the centre of Saigon, renamed
Ho Chi Minh City in "Uncle" Ho's honour, marked the tenth
anniversary of the fall of the premier city of the south of Vietnam to
North Vietnamese forces. This monograph is an account of what
happened to the towns and cities of Vietnam in the years between
these two dates.
Considerable debts are always incurred in writing this kind of
monograph. In particular, we should mention the help provided by
that growing community of people interested in modern Vietnam.
Nayan Chanda, Adam Fforde, Gerald Haberkorn, Gavin Jones,
David Marr, Nguyen Duc Nhuan and Dan Vining all provided us
with data and, in some cases, comments on the first draft of the
manuscript. Anthony O'Connor provided us with detailed notes on
the second draft. They are all, of course, absolved of any responsi-
bility for the outcome. The Australian National University pro-
