But his latest book, Pretty Doll Houses, despite its absurd title shows him to be on top form. It is as good an evocation of youth as Joyce Cary’s A House of Children. Confessedly autobiographical, the memories stretch from the loss, and recovery of a much-loved polar bear on wheels at the age of six to the death of an elder brother during the narrator’s late adolescence. But between these two events we witness his unfolding sense of human beings, particularly the part played in their lives by God and by sex. The gallery of grotesques in the family album are all conveyed with consummate understatement. It would be hard to describe the book’s many qualities in a short space. Read it. It is not likely to be rivaled by many novels this year; for the range of its moods and sympathies; it’s sure eye for landscape and weather ( in Wales and Yorkshire); it’s certain ear for dialogue and tones of voice; the sheer brilliance of the writing. As well as being both funny and sad, this book is full of wise aphorisms: ‘Pain is boring-your own and other people’s when you can do nothing about it.
