To Bob Hilderley for his very skillful editing of a very complicated man-
uscript. This is my fourth book edited by Bob, and each time I am more
impressed with his editorial skill. It is becoming easier and easier for me
and I am sure more and more difficult for Bob, but he succeeded in making
this book much more legible and much more interesting, while retaining
the scientific accuracy of what Dr Linus Pauling and I wrote.
I also dedicate this book to Linus Pauling, the greatest modern sci-
entist, for his immense contribution to the theory and practice of
orthomolecular psychiatry and medicine, and for his steadfastness and
determination not to be diverted by the “hordes” of critics. The father
of modern bedside medicine, Sir T. Sydenham, once wrote, “A medical
discovery is like a sapling in the middle of the King’s highway. If it is
not fenced in, it will be trampled by the galloping hordes.” He was ask-
ing for help from one of the nobility about 300 years ago because he
had discovered that small pox was best treated by decreasing the fever,
not by increasing it, as had been the custom for the previous 1,500 years.
Linus Pauling was such a medical discoverer. IfI had the power, I would
have given him an Honorary MD, to add to his dozens of Ph.D.s and
DScs.
I also must acknowledge the help and education I received from more
than 1,000 patients with cancer I have seen over the past 23 years, espe-
cially to Miss A.S., Case Number 84, born in 1919, first seen for her pan-
creatic cancer in July 1978, who died 19 February, 1999. She turned my
professional career around.
Finally, I acknowledge the help given to me by Fran Fuller, who has
for the past 22 years carefully and methodically kept my charts and main-
tained the records so that it is possible to keep the database in my com-
puter up-to-date with minimum effort.
