The conference which laid the groundwork for the present volumes was held
12–15 December 2012, at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), in the
Institute of Chinese studies (ICS). Sponsored by the Centre for China Studies

Daniel H. Bays
worked on late Qing politics at the University of Michigan with Al Feuerwerker
and Ernie Young. He was professor of history, director of the Asian Studies
Center and chair of the history department at the University of Kansas from
1971 until 1999. In 2000 he moved to Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan,
as the Spoelhof Chair and director of Asian studies. He retired from Calvin
in 2012. Since the late 1970s his research and publications have all focused on
Christianity in China. Major works have included (ed.) Christianity in China:
from the 18th century to the present (1996) and A new history of Christianity in
China (2011).
Sébastien Billioud
is professor of Chinese studies at the University Paris-Diderot, Sorbonne Paris
Cité. Based on a cross-disciplinary approach primarily in anthropology and
intellectual history, his research explores the multi-faceted development of
Confucianism during modern and contemporary periods. His main publica-
tions include Thinking through Confucian modernity (Leiden, 2012) and The
sage and the people: the Confucian revival in China, co-authored with Joël
Thoraval (Oxford, 2015).
Adam Yuet Chau 周越
is university senior lecturer in the anthropology of modern China in the
department of East Asian studies, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
He is the author of Miraculous response: doing popular religion in contemporary
China (Stanford, 2006) and editor of Religion in contemporary China: revitali-
zation and innovation (New York, 2011). He is interested in developing better
.d ways of conceptualizing Chinese religious culture. He is currently working on
e
vre book projects investigating the idiom of hosting (zuozhu) and forms of power-
se
r sth ful writing (“text acts”) in Chinese political and religious culture.
