Introduction
ost people love to travel, and most people also love to be
massaged, so you can imagine how incredibly lucky feel
I
that my life contains both these delights. Since I first trained in
London and Paris. have visited many parts of the world,
I
searching out massage techniques and the many
ways people help each other through touch.
My first journey was actually done in the library of the British Museum,
where sat researching day after day, tracking massage back over the
I
centuries and finding it everywhere, from Polynesia to Persia, from Japan
to the Sandwich Islands. I learned how in ancient Greece, Herodicus, teacher
of Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, made massage and exercise a
cornerstone of the medicine of the day - something that modern doctors now
support. In ancient Rome, Cicero, the great orator, said he owed as much to
his "anointer" as to his physician, and Julius Caesar was "pinched" daily by a
specially trained slave, to alleviate his neuralgic pains. In the 6th century, the
physician Aetius of Amide ordered massage for certain women "who do not
conceive." This is just what we are beginning to do again today; recently
have come across two cases of massage used on women with this problem,

and both later successfully conceived.
After traveling through history, my real journeys began. In places as
diverse as America and Afghanistan, New Zealand and Zanzibar, the hammams
of Turkey and Hungary and mountain villages in Thailand, learned
