A. 
Re­examining my priorities list from when I took the life coaching course in person, and 
now, several months later, allowed for some new insight into potential areas of change in my 
priorities.  Although not all things change, or even changed drastically, the smaller details and 
actions drawn out from the seven priority questions revealed change within this past year.  My 
hierarchy of priorities remained relatively the same. 
1. Continuing Education  
I will credit OPEX CCP for reinvigorating my quest for gaining knowledge and expanding 
my thought process around training, but also the areas of business, life coaching, and nutrition, 
further from what I learned in university programs. However, the importance of learning and 
seeking out new avenues for growth has remained a high level priority for me since high school 
wrestling. Of course back then it revolved around seeking out issues of “FLEX magazine” and 
“Muscular Development” for training programs and advice from bodybuilders. I think that is 
where so many find their initial start in fitness, I am very similiar in that regard.  
This did evolve over time as I progressed through undergraduate and graduate study in 
Kinesiology and Exercise physiology and into certifications from the ACSM, NSCA, followed by 
CrossFit and soon to be OPEX (hopefully), and I have a waitlist of further avenues of 
development ready to be tackled.  The theme has remained consistent for me and the “WHY” 
behind it has fundamentally as well. I have always been attracted to understanding how the 
body can be such and adaptive organism. In youth this was from a physical development 
perspective, with vanity and body composition being dominant. 
As I matured it transitioned into general health and wellness, understanding physiology 
and the biology of change within the organism and how this is transformed through health and 
over into performance. When I found the weight room in high school, when I found bodybuilding 
and sport training, I found a sense of growth and accomplishment through this new physical 
culture. I have always believed that I wanted to show others how to embrace and gain some of 
the same things I did through my experiences, and I see my journey through various forms of 
sport and education as a method of learning how to do that for as many people as possible.  
Currently this priority is being manifested through the CCP, exploring other means of 
development through vigorous reading of both research, textbooks of both new and classic 
information, and exploring non­fiction texts in various areas of personal development, business, 
and sociology to broaden my knowledge in fitness by finding concepts across multiple domains 
and attempting to find integration between them.  I collected a large amount of potential reading 
material through both CCP recommendations and simply seeing what others in the field are 
reading and recommending.  
Eric Cressey had a previous blog post about his yearly commitment to continuing 
education and how that looked between reading, seminars, online webinars and a common 
theme I have heard floating around is that a good start is to tackle 1 book a week. That is a 
starting goal for myself, and managing my time to allow for consistent development is a major 
priority for this year.  So currently I am in a state of absorption of as much relevant material as I 
can handle with quality retention.
I want to think that this process will change over time, although a lifelong development of 
education is important, over the next 10 years I would see this changing and evolving in focus 
not necessarily concept.  As I begin to grow and more deeply understand training and the 
application of physiology, my areas of growth will be forced to evolve through a greater 
understanding of other relevant areas outside of fitness based information. I see a further 
investigation into philosophy, sociology, psychology, any other realm that contains principles 
and systems of thought that I may or may not be able to adapt and add to my toolbox for 
developing greater programs, relationships, and results for the individuals I work with.  But all 
knowledge gain allow for new understandings. 
  Beyond this, I can see a transition into teaching, mentoring, or coaching that is based 
more around sharing and guiding knowledge than acquiring more.    This is an area I have 
already surrounded myself in through graduate assistantships and teaching undergraduate 
students the basics of exercise testing. I am also currently seeking a position to be a director of 
a university based community health program that pairs undergraduates in the Kinesiology 
department of a local college with community members interested in personal training. The 
position will require not only supervision of undergraduate programming and fitness testing, but 
critiques and the ability to challenge their thinking around creating training for this population. I 
think this setting is primed to promote this form of growth and to reveal where I have the ability 
to share knowledge and where I need to seek further information before attempting to speak on 
specific areas. 

2. Personal business development 
This only an area of truly recent development through the CCP program and my 
introduction into truthfully pursuing an understanding of business operations and how to run a 
successful facility or program within the industry of health and fitness.  I still have plenty to 
understand about actually running a successful business, whether that is in person, online, or 
facility ownership, the principles of business are not taught in traditional undergraduate exercise 
programs (that I have been exposed to).  I have always been interested in how to “make money” 
or “be successful” which started as many in the industry might see through late night fitness 
infomercials or 30­day shred programs, although I am glad to see that my path has strayed to 
something of deeper quality than that aspect of fitness. 
I was fortunate enough to have a strong undergraduate internship experience with a 
smaller local personal training facility that has been able to grow and remain successful in this 
industry by finding a niche in the market and providing consistent quality service offerings. Along 
with my exposure to another facility that is CrossFit based group training,  I have seen the 
operations of both models and been able to learn about successful systems and concepts 
around surviving and also thriving in this difficult industry.  
The reason I believe this to be a priority for myself has always revolved around owning 
and operating a facility some day.  I immediately had skepticism around the CrossFit box model 
of a weekend certificate and the opening the doors of a facility. It never sat right with my 
analytical mindset. I did not associate a brand with the independent success of a private facility. 
Also, I have always had this voice in the back of my mind saying “how long can you do this”. 
How long can I physically get up at 4:30 a.m. and work until 8:00 p.m. training individuals. What
does that mean for social development, for relationships to thrive, for personal enjoyment, for 
my own health and longevity.  There was an irony I saw in the lifestyle I was living as being 
highly irregular and not sustainable, yet teaching my clients about how to become more 
balanced in their own lives.  Where was the end game, in this profession, for me, and the 
answers I had for myself were not good. I knew that I needed to find an end game, to find 
sustainability, to create some form of legacy and independence in the future. I also find it 
interesting that the teaching of business is exploding in the CrossFit community. Bergeron, 
Khalipa, Affiliate solutions, and the list goes on are attempting to capitalize on those that dove 
into the box model head first and might not be staying afloat. It made me realize that my initial 
reservations were not misplaced at the time, so my inquiries with the owners of the facilities I 
operate out of became more frequent. Investigations into free resources surrounding the things 
necessary for opening a CrossFit gym become something of a background priority. 
I was not exposed to some real business concepts until the CCP and that had really 
pushed this priority towards a forefront that I am looking to develop my own systems to create 
the lifestyle  I think will provide me with longevity in the industry.  In ten years hopefully business 
development will have me on the way or accomplished in creating a sustainable piece of legacy 
with systems in place that do not require the day to day hours of the grind I currently live in. 

3. Gaining quality personal time. 
This priority revolves around my regular taking of time to simply unwind, sometimes at 
the expense of other priorities. I have found a struggle in the odd and long hours involved in 
personal training, and this clashes with my desires to have time to pursue personal interests 
related to travel, education, relationships and simple relaxation.  This priority developed based 
on my time in graduate school where my schedule was highly regulated around working, 
assistantships, research, studying and some attempts at a personal life, and has continued in 
relation to scenarios mentioned previously around the business priority and longevity in the 
profession.  
The concept of teaching or guiding individuals to live a healthier lifestyle, to learn to relax 
and destress, to improve their awareness around their bodies and their function, while 
simultaneously being on a detrimental schedule myself creates an internal struggle around what 
I do, and what I believe in. I am surviving this contrast at the moment, however I am concerned 
that over time, over a career, that this will create larger and larger issues around truth, health, 
mental attitude and diminish personal growth generally across the next decade.  I do not believe 
that I have earned a break necessarily, but I need to create and sustain a better balance within 
my time management that allows for successful development of my various priorities today, and 
in the future. As time passes many of my priorities may change, they will all hopefully develop, 
and this idea behind balance will not only allow that to happen, but will remain as a staple 
throughout my life.   

The overall concept or theme remained on a larger scale, however,  I noticed a shift 
within in my seven questions answers that revealed that a previous listed activity did not hold 
the same place as it previously had, it seemed to be downgraded slightly.
B. Triangle of Trust 

The components within the triangle of vary relative to the client base or knowledge base 
that I am working with or speaking to.  Based on the  vast majority of my client base, both within 
personal training and the CrossFit realm, I believe that my competency and reliability are both 
high relative to my caring.  
I mostly work with the typical 30­45 year deconditioned, overworked individuals.  My 
educational background of periodization, plyometric concepts and lactate threshold work are not 
relevant for this group. My experience with general fitness growth, working with community 
programs composed of geriatric and bariatric patients relate, in principle, much more to this 
population.  I also believe that my reliability in terms of program development, appointments and 
general communication are well developed with the proper amount of flexibility for a working 
professional.  
The concept of caring is causing the most imbalanced within this triangle. I find that I 
struggle sometimes to relate or understand individuals wavering motivations behind exercise or 
positive life changes.  I have personally  had periods of struggle related to consistency in fitness 
and health, I have never struggled to regain or motivate myself to return to a program of some 
sort. I find a natural draw to the physical work, it holds a therapeutic place for me.  Individuals 
who regularly speak to me of wanting change BUT when pressed for details on actionable 
changes related to those goals,  lack any form of demonstration in the proper direction and 
THEN cite these are reasons for the program not working after a brief period tend to not find 
much empathy from me.  
Blame cannot be completely put on them, however as they took a step to contact and 
work with a professional to seek these changes. SO it also forces an evaluation of the steps I 
suggested for that person. I work to understand if I truly pressed to much change over time, or 
did not support externally enough, did not provide tangible evidence, did I convince them of the 
value provided? Actively seek improvement around each client who leaves.  However, I think 
that my ability to read into and get a client to divulge deeper motivations is something that is 
lacking in my communication abilities.  This was something I felt was exposed during the Life 
Coaching module breakouts, it is not an area I feel comes naturally to me. 
In order to try to improve in this area, I  have implemented a more in depth discussion 
during my initial consults in order to create a greater degree of honest understanding between 
the client and myself. I speak to timelines around expectations based on their various goals.  I 
identify any irregularities I plainly identify when their current goals or expected outcomes and 
their current behaviors appear to be misaligned.  I attempt to do this “calling out” with my best 
bedside manner as to not appear aggressive or derogatory, but still able to communicate the 
issues I see initially instead of addressing them down the line when friction develops.  
In a learning aspect I have added more reading in regards to the psychology behind 
behavior change. This was not my strong suite in school either, so I am revisiting some of my 
textbooks and looking for related materials. The reading material I have set to work  my way 
through that I hope will help develop certain aspects of this component of life coaching and 
interpersonal relationship development are below.

C. AIM 

This is a great question and one that I have been skirting around in my own mind for 
quite some time lately. Currently, as the Open starts, my focus and goals remain competitively 
anchored.  I was fortunate enough to participate as part of the team competition at regionals last 
year, and currently the Open and hopefully team regionals will be again attainable. This will take 
me through May if the Open goes as planned, the gym qualifies, and I am selected to represent 
again as part of the team. Assuming we are not Games bound (reality bites), that puts my next 
step in training starting in early June.  
In terms of resources regarding the Open and Regionals, I have been working as an EC 
client of Matt Springers this off season in an attempt to actively be  part of the OPEX process 
and to maximize my potential for this year's competitive season.  Despite various ups and 
downs within training, motivation, and life balance, I believe I am poised to have my best Open 
performance yet.  If I was simply doing my own thing in training I would never have programmed 
and trained as Matt asked me to, the outside guidance and experience was very valuable in 
creating progress and personal awareness. This  guidance and preparation is something that I 
think will be displayed in my performance relative to my previous Open standings and help me 
secure another trip to regionals.  This will take me into June of this year before I am ready to 
take a new step in my fitness direction.  
I eluded to having thoughts around a change in my process throughout this offseason, 
and I am attempting to not ignore the truth behind my “competitive” career. I am going to “retire” 
from Open/Regional focused training.  Although I grew physically this past year with Matt’s 
guidance, my experiences last year leading up to regionals, and my growth in personal 
awareness are showing me signs that I am not balanced in my life, and training is causing part 
of that imbalance.  
Throughout my youth I was always a participant in recreational sports, year round, it was 
a great babysitter for my parents as many probably had similar experiences.  Although I was  a 
“multi sport youth athlete” I never really excelled in any  of them. Ball and stick sports I wasn't 
coordinated enough. Track and Field and Cross Country running I was always the slowest of the 
fast kids, or the fastest of the slow kids, the distinction minimal.  Wrestling, I was strong and 
technically sound, but lacked the aggression necessary to really win.  Joining CrossFit several 
years ago, at a gym that had a games bound team that year and which promoted a higher than 
normal competitive atmosphere and I was pulled right into that culture. The desire to achieve 
that status of being a regionals athlete, or being part of a group that made it to the games. I was 
hooked right in, and at that time, just  a few years ago, I was probably a better mental athlete 
than today. Less of a coach, less aware.
I had minimal awareness around limitations and abilities, I forgot that I am not truly 
competitive at heart, just highly active. I had no knowledge of what real training for this sport 
would be like, but I had a lifetime of multi­sport participation so learning new movements 
happened relatively quickly and progress was rapid. I never developed a true base of strength 
or endurance, but learned and became proficenet at all the advanced “sexy metcons” avaialbe. I 
added 100 pounds to my snatch within a year and took that as progress for absolute strength 
instead of skill development.  Within all of the avenues available to make easy progress, I never 
realized I may not be making any real progress and my false competitive drive was reinforced 
by the easy growth. This typical development did not last very long however, and the truths 
started to catch up to me, realizations set in and growth occurred. I consider stumbling upon 
OPT and OPEX a great turning point in my personal and professional development, OPT 
brought a word to so many things I had in the back of my mind already but didn't know how to 
express, or didn't know others had experienced as well.  
Now more experienced, more knowledgeable, more of a coach, having accomplished a 
personal goal of competing at regionals, and feeling the inner struggle that the competition had 
on me, I know that my new aim must be different.  The details of which I have not fully 
developed, partly because going too far down this path will interrupt the the one I am currently 
on and I still have, as well as others, expectations around my performances in the coming 
weeks and months.  However, words like longevity, sustainability, enjoyment, growth, are 
replacing intensity, competition, winning, points, and ego.  I also believe that OPEX will continue 
to play a part in being a fundamental resource in my future fitness aspirations, whatever they 
may ultimately look like. 

D. Consulting 
The initial consultation between a client and a coach or trainer can create a foundation 
for the rest of that relationship that helps ensure the right path is initially taken, or it can set up a 
series of poor realizations later down the line that damages the client/coach relationship and 
likely sabotages results.  This is the primary reason that consulting is an integral part of fitness 
coaching. 
Client and coach are able to get on the same page by having honest discussions around 
motivations, outcomes, history, expectations, and where we are at this moment relative to those 
expectations. This creates a truth between both the coach and client as to the directions that 
need to be taken and why they should be taken in a specific way.  The coach can also provide 
more realistic timelines relative to what the discussion dictates.  If a particular client initially 
states that their primary motivations are body composition related, or that they want to look 
good in a bathing suit, a deep discussion may reveal that they actually want to set a healthier 
example for their children and lead by example.  This new motivation, will provide a deeper 
sense of purpose for not only the client, a deeper buy in, but also for the coach in how they help 
approach and teach that individual about food, exercise and other facets of a healthy lifestyle 
that can be passed to the rest of the family.  
Consulting can also provide a reality to what realistic goals are for general population, 
not just potential athletes who are looking to make changes.  I have found that many initial
expectation for the average individual, 40+, sedentary for 1+ years, and newly motivated to 
regain their fitness tend to be out of line with a realistic starting point as to activity type, intensity, 
and volume. The initial motivation tends to yield an overly full exercise program from the start 
which leaves them sore and burnt out within weeks. So, consulting allows for a time to explain 
where they are and how much should be attempted now, and what that will lead to later in terms 
of training. This ensures that the individual doesn't feel like the coach isn't challenging them 
enough in the beginning, but now the client knows that the foundation is being built and that 
time will allow for greater growth.  
Consulting can also allow for a broader, zooming out, look at the individual's lifestyle, 
work, hobbies, general feelings of wellness and satisfaction in life.  When the initial motivations 
seems strong, the exercise starts out progressing well, but within a few weeks the signs of 
tiredness return, motivation is down.  But the coach cannot figure out WHY this is happening.  A 
more appropriate consult might have revealed that the client is a real estate agent, who in my 
experience are type A, overworked, under rested people who are at the whim of others 
schedules to make their living resulting in a rarely repeatable daily schedule of work and sleep. 
NOW a coach might have  a new series of training protocols, combined with educational pieces 
on how to build consistency in sleep, how to improve sleep, how to plan for nutrition while 
traveling, how to avoid caffeine in the late afternoon. Suddenly the relationship has taken on a 
much deeper and more comprehensive approach to change.  
This larger amount of lifestyle changes will likely leave the client needing to exit their 
current comfort zones in certain areas so that progress can be achieved.  This talking point is 
also something a good consultation will cover. Instead of missing this opportunity to speak on 
what changes might be needed initially and how those will develop over time, consultations can 
ensure that the individuals is preemptively aware of how lifestyle changes will challenge current 
habits and create times that are spent outside of comfort zones, both in and out of the training 
environment.  If an individual seems resistant to this idea, then the discussion can be useful in 
deciding if signing this person up is already destined for failure before starting.  The 
understanding that they should be open to change is important, challenges can be overcome 
with time, but stubborn resistance before starting may indicate to the coach that this client is not 
going to be successful and worthy of the time commitment required. A good consultation may 
result in turning away certain individuals, and that is alright, especially if the indicators are 
revealed that support the decision.  
All of these items can be discussed and create a larger understanding for the coach of 
where the prospect is currently, where they want to go on a deeper level, and discussing some 
of the realities of going to those places and what will be required for the client.   This can set 
everyone up for future success and ensure that unknown situations are less likely to arise in the 
months down the road that derail progress and possibly the trust in the relationship.
