This Lhukonzo-English English-Lhukonzo Dictionary is
a simplified guide to those wishing to learn and use either
of the two languages. The dictionary gives the user the basic
vocabulary of words commonly used in speaking or writing
about everyday subjects. Most of the words included in this
dictionary are therefore ofa non-specialist character.
This is a pioneering effort that we hope to make better with
subsequent editions. The users of this dictionary should be
awarethatitdoesnotcontainallpossibleLhukonzowordssince
thisisalanguagespokenbyaverylargenumberofpeoplefound
bothinUgandaandCongo. TherearewordsusedinCongothat
have aFrenchandotherneighbouringlocallanguageinfluence
that have not been included in this dictionary.
All words included in this dictionary have been classified
according to their grammatical classes and the class is shown
after each entry.

Verbs in Lhukonzo
In Lhukonzo, all verbs have one infinitive prefix, that is: 'eri'
which means 'to' in English. For example: (eri-ghenda', means
'to go'. 'Eri' is the prefix and 'ghenda' is the verb.
Whenaverbbeginswithavowel, theTintheprefixisreplaced

Ery'aghalhwa - To suffer
Ery'egha - To scratch
Ery'endya - To advertise
Ery'igha - To learn
Eiy'ikalha - To sit
Ery'olhobya - To soften
Ery'onga - To suck milk from the breast
Ery'umbulha - To resume
Ery'umbya - To despair
Thenounswhichbeginwith'o'or 'e'areeithersingularorplural
if they are not followed by a sign indicating that they belong
to a certain class ofnouns. Most ofthe verbs which begin with
'y' are reflexive.
Whenanounderives fromaverb, itbegins with 'emi'and ends
with 're'. In this form it is always singular.
For example:
Emibughire = Way ofspeaking. It comes from bugha:

Emirire = Way ofeating. It comes from rya: eat
Emilhangirire = Way ofseeing. It comes from Ihangira:

Emisekere = Way oflaughing. It comes from seka:
