a privileged place for meetings, exchanges and discovery, festivals provide a vibrant and accessible
environment for the widest variety of talent, stories and emotions that constitute Europe’s cinematography.
the MEDia programme of the European union aims to promote European audiovisual heritage, to encourage
the transnational circulation of films and to foster audiovisual industry competitiveness. The MEDIA Programme
acknowledged the cultural, educational, social and economic role of festivals by co-financing 85 of them
across Europe in 2008.
these festivals stand out with their rich and diverse European programming, networking and meeting
opportunities for professionals and the public alike, their activities in support of young professionals, their
educational initiatives and the importance they give to strengthening inter-cultural dialogue. In 2008, the
festivals supported by the MEDIA Programme have screened more than 18 700 European works to more
than 2.9 million cinema-lovers.
MEDIA is pleased to support the 7th edition of the IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival (Balchik,

lieux privilégiés de rencontres, d’échanges et de découverte, les festivals rendent vivante et accessible
au plus grand nombre la formidable diversité de talents, d’histoires et d’émotion que constituent les
cinématographies européennes.
le programme MEDia de l’union européenne vise à promouvoir le patrimoine cinématographique européen,
à encourager les films à traverser les frontières et à renforcer la compétitivité du secteur audiovisuel. Le
programme MEDia a reconnu l’importance culturelle, éducative, sociale et économique des festivals en
co-finançant 85 d'entre-eux dans toute l’Europe en 2008.
Ces manifestations se démarquent par une programmation européenne riche et diverse, par les opportunités
de rencontres qu'elles offrent au public et aux cinéastes, par leurs actions de soutien aux jeunes auteurs,
par leurs initiatives pédagogiques ou encore par l'importance donnée au dialogue inter-culturel.
En 2008, l'ensemble de ces festivals soutenus par le programme MEDIA a programmé plus de 18.700 œuvres
européennes pour le grand plaisir de près de 2,9 millions cinéphiles.

Sandy Lieberson entered the film industry as an agent
working in Los angeles, rome and London. among his
clients were Sergio Leone, richard Harris, Peter Sellers,
Lindsay anderson and The rolling Stones. in 1977, he
became the president of 20th Century Fox. Movies like
“STar WarS: ePiSode V - THe eMPire STriKeS baCK” by
George Lucas, “1900”, “La LUna” and “La TraGedia di
Un UoMo ridiCoLo” by bernardo bertolucci, “aLien” by
ridley Scott, “KaGeMUSHa” by akira Kurosawa and many
more were created under his supervision. From 1989 to
1993, Sandy Lieberson was the president of Metro-Goldwyn-
Mayer; during this time he was involved in the production
of ridley Scott’s “THeLMa and LoUiS” and “noT WiTHoUT
My daUGHTer” by director brian Gilbert. other mega
productions in his filmography are “onCe UPon a TiMe in
aMeriCa” by Sergio Leone and “P.o.V” – a concert movie
for Peter Gabriel with line producer Martin Scorsese; “bLade
rUnner” – again by director ridley Scott, “FLeSH and
bLood” – Paul Verhoeven’s debut and the three times
academy award winning “a rooM WiTH a VieW” directed

Sergey astakhov is cinematographer of more than 40 feature
and TV films including films from directors Sergey Selianov,
aleksey balabanov, Pavel Lungin. in 1980 he graduated
from russian State institute of Cinematography. Since 1982
he has worked as cinematographer at the Lenfilm Studios.
He is a winner of many prestigious awards, such as baFTa,
Golden Camera and Golden ram. an extraordinary
visual mimicry is demonstrated by Sergey astakhov as a
cameraman in his vast documentary and feature shooting
practice. astakhov believes that a professional cameraman
must “retreat from his own personality” for realisation of his
goal; and he always follows this declaration.

на Сергей астахов. той вярва, че операторът-
професионалист „трябва да отстъпва от

nevelina Popova is a scriptwriter and screenwriter. She is a
member of UbFM and baFTrS (bulgarian association of Film,
Theater and radio Scriptwriters). nevelina Popova won the
UbFM’s script fund award for the screenplay of "THe oTHer
PoSSibLe LiFe oF oUrS". She also won the second national
competition for new bulgarian dramaturgy for her play
Underneath the Hill of Hope. Teaches in the department of
Cinema, advertising and Show business at new bulgarian
University.

за млада българска драматургия за пиесата “ Под
хълма на надеждата”. доцент и преподавател по
кинодраматургия в нов български университет,
департамент „Кино, реклама и шоубизнес”.

Pierre bismuth is a contemporary artist whose work constitutes
a creative intervention into familiar codes, habits and
objects, in order to expose the mechanisms of visibility and
the creation of value and meaning. bismuth has recently
exhibited at the british Film institute in London, the Team
Gallery in new york, Kunsthalle bern, the istanbul Museum
of Modern art, and the Kadist art Foundation in Paris. in 2005
he won an oscar for co-authoring the screenplay of the
film eTernaL SUnSHine oF THe SPoTLeSS Mind, alongside
with Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman.
