Adolf Hitler heeft immers bevel gegeven grote delen van Zuidwest-Nederland onder water te zetten en de bevolking te evacueren. Wat moet Cathrien beginnen. Haar huwelijk met de man van wie ze houdt, Piet Krabbe, moet worden uitgesteld. Samen met haar broer Kees trekt ze met paard en wagen naar de Noordoostpolder. Na een barre reis vol zorgen en ontberingen arriveert ze in dit jonge stuk Nederland, waar ze ondanks alles zal moeten aarden.<br />Greetje van den Berg werd op 13 augustus 1959 in Zwolle geboren als jongste dochter in een gezin met vier kinderen. Ze groeide daar op, trouwde en verhuisde met haar man en zoon in 1983 naar Emmeloord in de Noordoostpolder. In 1986 kwam haar dochter ter wereld. In hetzelfde jaar trad ze bij de gemeente Noordoostpolder in dienst en in 1988 verhuisde de familie naar een buitenweg bij Ens.
