Décrivant de l'intérieur la ville assiégée, la jeune fille évoque les tirs d'artillerie et les bombes, la lutte pour survivre, les tickets de rationnement, la faim obsédante qui la tenaille et la quête désespérée de nourriture, le froid, le désespoir. Très vite, l'horreur s'installe, ses proches décèdent, la laissant seule. Mais elle fait preuve d'une force morale peu commune et son journal semble l'aider à entrer en résistance et à se battre contre la guerre, la mort et la déshumanisation. Ce texte est un document rare et l'oeuvre d'un véritable écrivain. Le manuscrit original, remis aux Archives nationales de Saint-Pétersbourg par un inconnu en 1962, a été authentifié par des historiens. Publié en 2011 en Russie, à l'occasion du soixante-dixième anniversaire du blocus de Leningrad, il est salué comme un événement dans la douzaine de pays où ses droits ont été vendus.
