Chatsworth è altresì sicuro che "La violetta del Prater" sbancherà il botteghino, ma a due condizioni: che a dirigerlo sia il più talentuoso e paranoide fra i registi immigrati disponibili, Friedrich Bergmann, e che a scriverlo sia il giovane sceneggiatore più brillante su piazza - Christopher Isherwood. Quanto segue è semplicemente la storia veridica (come il suo doppio narrativo, Isherwood prima della guerra aveva effettivamente lavorato alla Gaumont) e non resistibile (a volte, si sa, i making of sono cinema allo stato puro) di come un film nasce e si trasforma, e soprattutto di come a ogni giorno di lavorazione rischia, nei modi spesso più folli e sgangherati, la catastrofe. Per John Boorman, questo piccolo gioiello semidocumentario era il più bel libro in circolazione sul rapporto fra il cinema immaginario e quello reale; per qualsiasi lettore, sarà quantomeno un'appassionante parafrasi della lapidaria definizione che Bergmann, in un momento di franchezza, largisce a Christopher: "Sa che cos'è un film? Semplice è una macchina infernale."
