Auf den Tagungen der Internationalen Gerbervereinigung stellte sich in allen Lii.ndern
das Bedurfnis heraus nach einem ausfUhrlicheren Worterbuch der Lederherstellung als
solche bisher vorlagen. Ieh wurde mit der Bearbeitung betraut und lege die Arbeit
nunmehr vor.
Mitgearbeitet haben an den Fachausdrucken und Obersetzungen in erster Linie die
Herren P. W. WILSON von der Internationalen Gerbervereinigung, London, und WILHELM
HOFFMANN, Buenos Aires, jetzt Berlin, des weiteren die Herren JULES BLUM, Paris,

Die Zusammenstellung der Schuharten und Schuhmaschinen besorgte Herr Direktor
ALOIS STUTZ, Leiter der Fachschule der Deutschen Schuhindustrie, Pirmasens. Das
Kapitel Portefeuille- und Lederwaren wurde von Herrn Dr. LEONHARDT, Offenbach,
Qufgestellt. Ein Teil des Wortmaterials wurde mit Erlaubnis des Herrn Professors Doktor
J. PAESSLER einer friiheren Arbeit der Herren Professor Dr. PAESSLER und R. LAun
MANN entnommen. Auch diesen Herren sei an dieser Stelle herzlich gedankt.
Das Worterbuch ist in seinem erst en Teil fachlich geordnet und somit fUr aHe Fach
leute, fUr die es in erster Linie bestimmt ist, leicht verstii.ndlich. Zur Etleichterung des
Auffindens der Obersetzungen und fUr Nichtfachleute wurde im zweiten Teil des Buches
das ganze W ortverzeichnis in den 5 Sprachen nochmals alphabetisch geordnet mit je
weiliger Angabe der Seitenzahl und Wortnummer.
Bei der Aufstellung des Worterbuches haben sich insofern Schwierigkeiten ergeben,
als manche Begriffe sich in den einzelnen Landern und Gegenden nicht ganz decken und
die Bezeichnungen fUr viele Dinge auf dem Gebiet der Lederindustrie abweichend sind.
Die vorliegande Arbeit soll dazu beitragen, feste Bagriffsbestimmungen zu schaffen und
solche international festzulegen. Es wurde dabei weitgehend den in Wissenschaft und
Praxis verwendeten Fachausdriicken Rechnung getragen.
Eine philologisch-wissenschaftliche Oberprufung ist nicht erfolgt. Haufig sind
handelsiibliche Fachausdru:}ke sprachwissenschaftlich nicht einwandfrei. Ich muflte
mich in diesen Fallen nicht an den wissenschaftlich richtigen, sondern an den fachlich
iiblichen Ausdruck halten.
FUr die Bekanntgabe von Irrtumern und Anregungen fiir weitere Fachworter und
t'bersetzungen bin ich stets dankbar.

At the meetings of the lnt.ernational Council of Tanners the need has frequently been
expressed for a more detailed dictionary of the leather trades than those which have been
available hitherto. I was entrusted with the work of compiling this dictionary, and now
offer the result of my labours.

pressions. The section relating to shoe manufacture was dealt with by the MASOHINEN
FA BRIK MOENUS A.-G., Frankfurt-on-Main, and the chemical section by the I. G. F ARB EN
INDUSTRIE A.-G., Frankfurt-on-Main. The classification of the different varieties of
shoes and of shoe machinery was undertaken by Mr. ALOIS STUTZ, director of the Fach
schule der Deutschen Schuhindustrie, Pirmasens. The leather goods section was compiled
by Dr. LEONHARDT, Offenbach. Part of the material has been taken, by permission of
Professor J. PAESSLER, from an earlier work published by himself and Mr. R. LAUFF
MANN. Grateful thanks are here rendered to these gentlemen.
The first part of the dictionary is grouped in accordance with the various divisions of the
trade, and will therefore be easily handled by those technical members of the trade for whom
it is primarily intended. In order to facilitate reference to the translations for those
without technical knowledge, the whole of the expressions have been repeated in alpha
betical order in the five languages in the second part of the book with an indication of
the number of the page and of the definition.
In compiling the dictionary difficulties have been experienced in that many ex
pressions do not quite correspond in different countries and localities, and the descriptions
of many articles used in the leather industry vary considerably. It is hoped that the
present work will help to standardise the definitions and to secure their international
adoption. In this connection careful account has been taken of the various technical
expressions used in the laboratory and in the trade.
The work has not been revised by a philologist. To a large extent technical expressions
which are in general use in trade circles are not philologically free from objection. In
such cases I have felt compelled to adhere to the customary trade term at the expense
of philological exactitude.
I shall always be grateful for a notification of errors and suggestions regarding further
technical expressions and translations.

have co-operated with me in the compilation of this dictionary. My special thanks are
due to my indefatigable colleague, Fra.ulein KUHLMANN, who after more than three

vocabulaire s'adresseen premier lieu aux techniciens, ils pourront ainsi Ie consulter
facilement. Pour ceux qui ne Ie sont pas et pour leur faciliter Ia recherche des traductions,

Lors de 10. mise au point de ce dictionnaire, certaines difficultes se sont presentees
du fait que bea.ucoup d'expressions ont une signification differente dans Ie domaine du
cuir selon les pays ou les regions. Le present ouvrage doit contribuer a trouver Ie sens
exact des mots qui peuvent etre employes pour 1' usage international. II a ete tenu compte
dans 10. mesure du possible des expressions professionnelles employees scientifiquement
et pratiquement.
Une verification philolo-scientifique n 'a pas eu lieu. Souvent les expressions pro
fessionnelles ne sont pas correctes philologiquement. J'ai dii m'en tenir dans ces cas
a
non pas aux expressions exa.ctes au point de vue philologie, mais celles qui sont em
ployees couramment dans notre branche.

La primera parte del vocabulario representala clasifica.ci6n de las palabras en secciones
tecnicas. De tal arreglo aprovecharan los interesados del ramo, a los cuales en primer
lugar la obra esta destinada.. Para facilitar tambien a los laicos el encuentro de las palabras
buscadas y su traducci6n, en la segunda parte del libro se indica de nuevo todas las
palabras en los cinco idiomas, esta vez por orden alfabetico con n6mina de p8,gina.s y
numero respectivo de cada palabra.
Reparo especial se puso en descartar dificultades en Ia significa.cion de palabras que
no"siempre enuncian conceptos analogos en las diferentes regiones de una misma habla
y en cuya interpretaci6n muchas vecea se presenta.n divergencias. La. obra he. de con
tribuir a establecer terminos concretos ateniendose a las palabras tecnicas mas usadas
que nos ofrecen ciencia y practica.
Este voca.bulario carece de una revisi6n filoI6gico-cientifica.. Aunque las palabras
muchas veces no expresan correccion Iingilistica, yo tuve atenerme no a indica.ciones
idiomatico-precisadas sino a los terminos tecnicos comerciales por ser elIos de uso comun.

La prima. parte del vooa.bolario compilata secondo I'ordine tecnico ed cos1 ben

tare 180 ricerca delle traduzioni e specialmente per gli incompetenti, nella seconds. parte
dellibro I'indice completo nelle 5 lingue e compilato secondo l'ordine alfabetico con
rispettiva indicazione della pagina e del numero d'ordine del voca.bolo.
Nella compilazione del vocabolario si sono incontrate delle difficolta. in quanto che
nei diversi pa.esi e nelle diverse contrade alcune definizioni non corrispondono fra di Ioro
e in molti casi i termini tecnici sono contraddittori. Illavoro qui presente ha per scopo
e
di fondare dei termini fissi, che dovranno essere applicati in tutti i paesi. Si tenuto
Iargamente conto dei termini tecnici in uso neUa scienza e nella pratica.
Una verifica di carattere filologico-scientifico non Eo state. fatta. Spesse volte i termini
tecnici usuali non sono esatti dal punta di vista filologico. 10 mi dovetti attenere in
questi ca.si 0.1 termine usato nella pratica e non a quello scientificamente esatto.
Sara sempre riconoscente per osservazioni riguardo aU'esattezza del vocabolario
e per il suggerimento di altri termini e troouzioni.

Vorwort znr zweiten Anflage.
Die erate Auflage des Internationalen Warterbuches der Lederwirtschaft, die 1936
erschien, war wenige Jahre spater vallig vergriffen, der beste Beweis, daJ3 die Arbeit
einem Bediirfnis entsprochen hat und in Fachkreisen anerkannt wurdo. Nur der Krieg
hatte eine langst faUige Neuauflage verzogert. Die vorliegende AUl!gabe jst die erste
Veraffentlichung der Internationalen Gerbervereinigung naeh dem Kriege und enthii.lt
eine Reihe von Erganzungen, Verbesserungen und Vereinfaehungen. Gleiehzeitig wurde
der ffir Deutschland bestimmten Ausgabe ein russischer Tail beigefUgt. Es wa.r nicht
moglich, alle Erganzungen in den verschiedenen Landern durch Saehverstandige prufen
zu lassen, wie dies bei der ersten Ausgabe der Fall war. Jedoch wurden spracherfahrene
Fachleute in Deutschland befragt, so daB wir hoffen, daB Fehler vermieden wurden.
Allen Mitarbeitern, die ieh diesmal nicht einzeln nennen mochte, fiir ihre Bemuhungen
hel'zlichen Dank. Die Zusammenstellung des Buches erfolgte auch diesmal wieder durch
meine langja.hrige Mitarbeiterin, Fraulein KUHLMANN, Weinheim, der an dieser Stelle

Preface second edition.
The first edition of the International Dictionary of the Leather and Allied Trades,
published in 1936, was completely sold out within a couple of years or so, clearly proving
that the Dictionary was a necessity and appreciated by those in the leather industry.
Had it not been for the war a new edition would have been issued years ago. The present
edition is the first publication of thE' International Council of Tanners aft,er the war,
and contains a series of additions, improvements and simplifications. On this occasion
a Russian translation ha.s been added to the edition of tho book printed for circulation
in Germany. It ha.s not been possible to have all the additions verified by experts in
the different countries as was the case in the first edition. Experts in the different
languages in Germany have been consulted, however, and we hope that errors have
been avoided.
I am indebted to so many for co-operation in the compilation of this edition that
I will not name them individually. I wish to express, however, my special thanks to
my collaborator for many YEars past, Fraulein KUHLMANN of Weinheim, on whom the
bulk of the work for the compila'~ion of the book has fallen.

Paroe en 1936, la premiere edition du Dictionnaire International des Cuirs et Peaux
at de leU1'l'l Derives a etC epuisee en quelques annees. Ceci prouve mieux que tout autre
l'intel'et que cet ouvrage a suscite aupres de l'industrie du cuir et que 180 reedition cor
respond a une necessite qui jusqu'a ce jour a ete retardee par 180 guerre. La nouvelle
publication presentee actuellement au commerce est 180 premiere d'apres-guerre du Con
seil International des Tanneurs et comprend toute une serie de supplements, amende
ments et simplifications. En plus, l'edition destinee a l'usage de l'indllstrie allemande
a etC completee d'une traduction en russe. Dans l'impossibilite de faire verifier toutes
les additions par des experts linguistiqucs dans les differents pays, nous avons pris
l'a,vis des personnes connaissant a fond les langues en Allemagne, afin de reduire des
erreurs toujours possible au minimum.

La primera edici6n del Diccionario Internacional para la Industria Manufacturera
del Cuero y Comercio que apareci6 en 1936 se agot6 por completo a los pocos anos de
emitida, siendo este hecho prueba elocuente de que la obra en cuesti6n Ilen6 una nece
sidad existente y de que ha sido aceptada y aprobada por los circulos interesados del
ramo. A las consecuencias de la guerra se debe la demora que sufri6 la publicaci6n de
la nueva edici6n que hace tiempo venia haciendo falta. La presente edici6n es la primera
publicaci6n emitida por el Consejo Internacional de Curtidores despues de 10. guerra,
aumentada por algunas adiciones, perfeccionamientos y simplificaciones. A la vez Ie
fue agregada a la edici6n destinada para Alemania una secci6n en idioma ruso. No ha
sido posible someter a peritaje de los circulos interesados en los distintos paises todos
los aumentos contenidos en este nuevo tomo, como se procedi6 con 180 primera edici6n.
Enca.mbio fueron consultados expertos del ramo, versados en loa respectivos idiomas
y en tal virtud suponemos haber suprimido cualquier evento de malinterpretaci6n y de
erroras fundamentales.
Finalmente me permito agradecer cordialmente a todas las personas que contribuyeron

Prefazione seconda edizione.
La prima edizione del Vocabolario InternazionaIe dell'Industria e del Commercio del
Cuoio pubblicata nel 1936 fu esaurita completamente pochi anni dopo la sua pubbli
cazione, segno sicuro che quest'opera fu approvata dai competenti e rispondeva ad un
bisogno generale. Una nuova edizione, do. molto tempo prevista, fu ritardata a causa.
della guerra. La presente edizione, 10. prima pubblicazione del Consiglio Internazionale
dei Conciatori del dopoguerra, comprende una serie di complementi, correzioni e sempli
ficazioni. Si aggiunse inoltre una parte russa alla edizione tedesca. Non riusci possibile
di far verificare tutte Ie modifiche da esperti dei rispettivi pa.esi come fu il caso riguardo
alla prima edizione. Tuttavia la consultazione di esperti tedeschi di lingue estere ci fa
sperare che sbagli siano stati evitati.
