PlasticSurgeryisthemostcovetedfieldamongmedicalstudentsallovertheworld.
Cynicsmightconcludethatthisisduetotheattractionofaestheticsurgery,but
theyarewrong.
Studentsrealizeveryearly,thatplasticsurgeryhasmuchmoretooffer:wetreat
babiesandoldpatients,fromheadtotoe,withavarietyofsophisticatedtechniques,
withthechallengeofmicrosurgerytoppingthelist.Creativityisanintegralpartof
ourdailywork.
Weusethesetechniquestomakeindividualsregaintheirphysicalintegrity,weare
thequality-of-lifespeciality.
Onourwaytocompetenceinthisfieldweneedgreatexamples,weneedheroes.
Andweareluckytohavesomanyofthem.
Nootherfieldinmedicineisasmuchinternationallyorientedasplasticsurgery:
inIPRAS96nationalplasticsurgerysocietiesarerepresented.Oneofthemainob-
jectivesofIPRASistoincreasethenumberoftrainingsitesandsubsequentlythe
numberoffullyandwelltrainedplasticsurgeonsworldwide.
WithprideIcansay,thatplasticsurgeryisalsothefieldwiththehighestnumber
ofphysiciansinvolvedinhumanitarianmissions.Thesemissionsnotonlyprovide
free treatment for patients in need, they also serve the purpose of promoting the
trainingofyoungplasticsurgeonsindevelopingcountries.
Mostofthecontributorsofthisbookhavebeenandstillareinvolvedinthesemis-
sions.Theyarededicatedtoteaching.
Ratherthaninvitingthemtocontributeachaptertoatextbook,weaskedthemto
share theirgreatestcontributionto thefuture of plasticsurgerywithus. We were
thrilledwhenwefirstsawtheirarticles.

“ItisnowMondayandweareinthesecondweekofcreation”PeterSloterdijkjust
recently stated in his prize award speech for innovative publication management.
Nanotechnology,biotechnologyandgenetechnologyarerevolutionizingourscien-
tificworldasmuchasoureverydaylife–comparableonlytothechangesattheturn-
ingtowardstheindustrialageattheendofthe19thcentury.
PlasticSurgery,oneoftheyoungestmono-specialtiesinmedicine,historicallyhas
beeninnovativetoadrasticextentbyintroducingandaddingthetreatmentofexter-
nalappearanceofmankindintomedicalsciencesofhealingpatientsofexclusively
functionaldiseases.Asthequalityofresultsismoreobviousinplasticsurgerythan
inothermedicalfieldsthesearchforconstantperfectiontogetherwithlessertrau-
matictechniquesisinherentinourdailywork.
Thisbookintendstoallowanuptodateoverviewofthelatestconsentedtech-
niquesinPlasticandAestheticsurgery.Theinspiringsparkwasthe14thquadrenni-
alInternationalCongressoftheInternationalConfederationforPlastic,Reconstruc-
tiveandAestheticSurgery(IPRAS)2007Berlin,Germany.PlasticSurgeonsfromall
overtheworldexchangedtheirexpertknowledge,innovativeideasandexperience.
From all representative sections of our fascinating specialty we are grateful to
have been able to include altogether 58 contributions from autografting and allo-
graftslikefacetransplantationtoxenografts,frommicrosurgicaltechniquestolaser
technology,fromstemcellresearchtobodyliftingrefinements.Thedifferentchap-
tersarenotseparatedbyindicationsuchasreconstructiveoraestheticaseverysin-
gletechniqueortherapyinPlasticSurgerybydefinitionwillneverbereconstructive
withoutrespecttotheaestheticoutcomeandviceversa.Chapterorganisationhas
beenintroducedaccordingtodifferenttechniquesoranatomicalunits.
Scienceandprogresscannotexistwithoutinnovativeideasandtheircreators,but
allinnovationsarebasedontheexperienceandestablishedknowledgeofourprede-
cessors.Manypromisingnewfindingswillnotsurviveforeverorberejectedaftera
whileoreveninnovatedbytheoriginalauthorsorothers.Manyoldtechniqueson
theotherhandhaveneverbeenneglected:theever-citedIndianFlape.g.Thecoexis-
tenceofboth:oldandnew–isthesecretofgoodscience.
