Joachim (/ˈdʒoʊəkɪm/; Hebrew: םיקיוהי Yəhōyāqīm, "he whom Yahweh has set up";
Greek: Ἰωακείμ, romanized: Iōākeím; Arabic: ﻥﺍﺮﻤﻋ, romanized: ʿImrān) was, according
to Christian tradition, the husband of Saint Anne and the father of Mary, the mother of
Jesus. The story of Joachim and Anne first appears in the Biblical apocryphal Gospel of
James.[1] His feast day is 26 July, a date shared with Saint Anne.
In Christian tradition
The story of Joachim, his wife Anne (or Anna), and the miraculous birth of their child
Mary, the mother of Jesus, was told for the first time in the 2nd-century apocryphal in-
fancy-gospel the Gospel of James (also called Protoevangelium of James). Joachim was
a rich and pious man, who regularly gave to the poor. However, Charles Souvay, writing
in the Catholic Encyclopedia, says that the idea that Joachim possessed large herds and
flocks is doubtful.[2]
At the temple, Joachim's sacrifice was rejected, as the couple's childlessness was inter-
preted as a sign of divine displeasure. Joachim consequently withdrew to the desert,
where he fasted and did penance for 40 days. Angels then appeared to both Joachim and
Anne to promise them a child.[3]
Joachim later returned to Jerusalem and embraced Anne at the city gate, located in the
Walls of Jerusalem. An ancient belief held that a child born of an elderly mother who
had given up hope of having offspring was destined for great things. Parallels occur in
the Old Testament in the case of Sarah, the wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac, Han-
nah, the mother of Samuel,[4] and in the New Testament in the case of the parents of St
John the Baptist.
The cycle of legends concerning Joachim and Anne was included in the Golden Legend
(around 1260) by Jacobus de Voragine. This cycle remained popular in Christian art un-
til the Council of Trent (1545–1563) restricted the depiction of apocryphal events.
No liturgical celebration of Saint Joachim was included in the Tridentine Calendar. It
was added to the General Roman Calendar in 1584, for celebration on 20 March, the day
after the feast day of Saint Joseph. In 1738, it was transferred to the Sunday within the
Octave of the Assumption of Mary. As part of his effort to allow the liturgy of Sundays
to be celebrated, Pope Pius X (term 1903–1914) transferred it to 16 August, the day after
the Assumption, so Joachim may be remembered in the celebration of Mary's tri-
umph.[5] It was then celebrated as a Double of the Second Class, a rank that was
changed in 1960 to that of Second Class Feast. In the 1969 revision of the General Ro-
man Calendar, it was joined to that of Anne, for celebration on 26 July.[6]

The Eastern Orthodox Churches and Greek Catholics commemorate Joachim on 9 Sep-
tember, the Synaxis of Joachim and Anne, the day after the Nativity of the Theotokos.
Joachim is remembered (with Anne) in the Church of England with a Lesser Festival on
26 July.[7]
Patronage
Joachim is named as the patron saint of fathers, grandfathers, grandparents, married cou-
ples, cabinet makers, and linen traders.[8]
Iconography

In medieval art he often wears a conical Jewish hat. He is often treated as a saint, with a
halo, but in the Western church there was some awareness that he had quite likely died
too soon to strictly be counted as a Christian.
Joachim and Anne Meeting at the Golden Gate was a popular subject in artistic rendi-
tions of the life of the Virgin.
Symbols associated with Saint Joachim include a book or scroll representing linen mak-
ers, a shepherd's staff for the Christian Word, and a basket of doves representing peace.
He is almost always clothed in green, the color of hope.[8]
The name of the San Joaquin River dates to 1805–1808, when Spanish explorer Gabriel
Moraga was surveying east from Mission San José in order to find possible sites for a
mission. The name was in common use by 1810.[9]

In Islam he is called Imran (Arabic: ﻥﺍﺮﻤﻋ, romanized: ʿImrān), and one of his believed
graves is in Salalah; which is claimed to be the "longest grave in the world" (12
metres).[10][11] According to the Quran in Al Imran Imran is the father of Maryam and
grandfather of ʿIsa.

Prophet Zakariya and Birth of Mariam Mary Jesus’s Mother
ﻢﻴِﺣَّﺮﻟﺍ ِﻦَﻤْﺣَّﺮﻟﺍ ِﻪﻠﻟﺍ ِﻢْﺴِﺑ
Praise be to God the Creator of the world, the One Who exists without beginning, with-
out end, without location, without a "how" and Who does not depend on time. Nothing
resembles Him in anyway and He hears and sees everything without organs. Whatever
you imagine, God is different from that. May the elevation in degree and preservation of
his community of what he fears for it, be granted to our master Muḥammad Al-‘Amin,
the Honest One, who called for following Islam, the religion of truth, the religion of all
the Prophets: of the First, Adam, to the last Muḥammad.
It was narrated that Lady Mariams father, `Imran the son of Mathan, was a Muslim
scholar from the descendants of prophet Ya`qub (Jacob), also known as Prophet Israel.
`Imran married Hannah the daughter of Faqoudh and she bore him a daughter whom
they named Isha`. Prophet Zakariyah who was a carpenter and the cousin of Hannah,
married Isha`. It is permissible in the rules of Islam for cousins to intermarry.
Prophet Zakariyah used to worship a great deal even before receiving the revelation. At
that time there were no prophets in Beit-ul-Maqdis (Jerusalem). One day after he had
finished praying in the miHrab (a slightly raised section at the front of the mosque)
where his grandfather prophet Dawoud (David) used to pray, Angel Jibril came to Zakar-
iyah with the revelation from Allâh that he is a prophet to the Israelites. Prophet Zakar-
iyah started calling people to Islam, supported in his truthful claim by clear miracles.
Some people believed in him and followed him while others belied him.
He continued calling them to do what is good and avoid what is bad, and he chose Beit-
ul-Maqdis as his place of worship where he was joined by other Muslim scholars at the
time.
Many years passed without prophet Zakariyah having children because his wife was bar-
ren. By that time, his mother in-law Hannah was old, but once while she was sitting with
her husband `Imran under the shade of a tree, she saw a bird feeding its young. At that
moment she missed having children and started crying. She told her husband what she
saw and how she felt and she said, "Let us go pray and make supplication (du`a)."
They got up, prayed and made supplication to Allâh to grant them a child. `Imran then
dreamt that Allâh had answered their prayers and granted them a child. Their dream did
indeed come true when Hannah became pregnant. Allâh ta`âlâ inspired her and she said:
"If Allâh enables me to deliver this child I shall make him a MuHarrar. "That is a person
who is devoted to serving and taking care of the mosque and worshipping Allâh. When
she made this vow, `Imran said: "What have you done?! What if the child you deliver is
a girl?" and they were both saddened by this thought. After a few months, `Imran died
and his wife was left alone, waiting for the birth of their child.
The MuHarrar was usually a boy who lived in the mosque, he would take care of it by
sweeping it, lighting the lights, and the like until he reached puberty. At that time he
would have been given a choice of staying in the mosque or leaving it. If he chose to
leave, then he was free to do so. If however, he chose to stay then he was committed to
stay there for the rest of his life. All the Israelite prophets had a MuHarrar in Jerusalem
among their offspring. The position of MuHarrar was specific for boys because girls
well ill suited for it due to their menstruation, which when in this state it is not permissi-
ble for her to remain in a mosque.
When Hannah gave birth, she was expecting a boy and she was surprised she delivered a
girl. "My Lord", she said, "I have given birth to a girl." She was hopeful of having a boy
who would be able to become a MuHarrar and work in Jerusalem. She then said to her-
self, "Allâh knows best, perhaps something good will come of this girl." By thinking
about the situation in this way, some of the sorrow and disappointment that Hannah felt
was lessened. She named her new daughter, Mariam, Which means the worshipper, in
the hope that she would live up to her name.
Hannah then said, in supplication to Allâh ta`âlâ, "I ask you to protect my daughter from
the offspring from the cursed devil."
Prophet Zakariyah then informed Hannah that Allâh ta`âlâ accepted her vow and ac-
cepted Mariam as a MuHarrar, despite the fact that she was a girl. Mariam was the first
female to become a MuHarrar. Allâh granted Lady Mariam a beautiful appearance, and
she was the most beautiful and the most complete women of her time. She would grow
in one day what other children would grow in a year. It was narrated the she spoke when
she was just a baby as he son `Isa (Jesus), would later do. Furthermore, Lady Mariam
was never breastfed by her mother, rather Allâh provided her sustenance in an extra-or-
dinary way.
It was narrated that upon giving birth to Mariam, Hannah did not breast feed her, rather
she wrapped her in a piece of cloth and took her to the mosque. Prophet Zakariyah was
there with a group of Israelite scholars who looked after the mosque. They said to her,
"What is this you bring us, Hannah?" wondering why Hannah brought them a girl to be
a MuHarrrar. "She is my daughter Mariam", replied Hannah. "I have committed her to
being a MuHarrar and Allâh accepted her so please don’t turn her away." They looked at
prophet Zakariyah for a decision regarding her and he said, It is necessary to appoint
someone to look after her until she reaches the age at which she can work in the mos-
que."
It was customary for the Muslim scholars to conduct a draw when a MuHarrar arrived,
to see which one of then would teach him. This time however, they asked Prophet Zakar-
iyah, "Who among us will have this job?" He replied, "I am better suited because I am
her sisters husband and her mothers cousin." The scholars said, "Let us conduct a draw
anyhow to see which one of us should be her guardian." All 27 of them, including
Prophet Zakariyah, went to the Jordanian River, and threw in the pens that they used to
write the Torah with, seeking Allâh’s blessings.
All the pens sunk except for prophet Zakariyah’s, which floated, this was a great miracle
for prophet Zakariyah. They wanted to do a draw a second time, and so they threw in
their pens again. All the pens went with the tide, except for Prophet Zakariyah’s. It went
against the current of the water. They wanted to do the draw a third time, and so they
threw their pens in again. This time all the pens sunk while Prophet Zakariyah’s stood
upright as if it had been emdedded in the mud. And so she became his ward.
Hannah, peace be upon her, died a short while after giving birth to Mariam. Even though
Mariam was now an orphan, Allâh compensated her by entrusting her to Zakariyah who
took her to his wife Isha`, her older sister, to take care of her.
From a young age, Mariam was obedient to Allāh and avoided all that went against the
rules of Islam. When she was old enough, Prophet Zakariyah built a mihrab for her,
which is the most honoured place in the mosque. Prophet Zakariyah was the only person
who would come to see Mariam, accompanied by Yusuf the carpenter, Mariams cousin,
who was also a MuHarrar.
Because Prophet Zakariyah was Mariams guardian, he would frequently come in to visit
and check on her. Each time he came to see her, he would find that she had food that he
had not brought her. She would have the fruits of summer in the winter, and the fruits of
winter in summer.
Having observed this a few times, he was very curious to know where or how her food
was coming from, so he asked her. She replied, "It is sustenance from Allâh, for Allâh
grants whomever He wills, whenever he wills." This was an extraordinary occurrence
that Lady Mariam was endowed with and it showed her high status and complete belief.
When Prophet Zakariyah heard this, he was happy that the person whom he was en-
trusted with was pious and had a high rank. She was the best women to ever live, may
Allâh ta`âlâ be reward her.
Prophet Jesus (^Isa) and His Mother Mary are Muslim

More than 2000 years ago, in the blessed land of Palestine, there lived the Israelites (12
tribes that descended from Prophet Jacob, otherwise known as Israel). Among them was
a girl called Maryam (Miriam, Mary, Maria) the daughter of `Imran (not Moses’ father)
and Hannah (Anna, Ann). After her father’s death she grew up in the care of Prophet Za-
kariyya (Zechariah), the husband of her sister Elizabeth. By the age of 14, she was a de-
vout and righteous young female. She became the highest ranking woman in history, as
stated in the Qur’ân (Sûrat Al `Imrân, ‘âyah 42):
﴿ َﻦﻴِﻤَﻟﺎَﻌْﻟﺍ ِﺀﺎَﺴِﻧ ٰﻰَﻠَﻋ ِﻙﺎَﻔَﻄْﺻﺍَﻭ ِﻙَﺮَّﻬَﻃَﻭ ِﻙﺎَﻔَﻄْﺻﺍ َﻪَّﻠﻟﺍ َّﻥِﺇ ُﻢَﻳْﺮَﻣ ﺎَﻳ ُﺔَﻜِﺋﺎَﻠَﻤْﻟﺍ ِﺖَﻟﺎَﻗ ْﺫِﺇَﻭ ﴾
One day while fetching water by herself, Maryam was startled by the presence of a man.
Terrified, she told him that he should not harm her if he feared God. He announced him-
self as the messenger of God (Jibril, Gabriel) carrying good news of her bearing a boy
who would grow pious and sinless. The pure Maryam inquired, « How can I have a son
when no man has touched me, and I am not a fornicator?! » Angel Jibril told her: « Cre-
ating a son without a father is an easy matter to Allâh. Allâh will make your son a sign
to mankind and mercy and a blessing to those who believe in and follow him. Creating
him is a matter that Allāh has decreed ; so it will not be blocked or changed. »
Angel Jibril blew the soul of Jesus in Maryam through the collar of his garment and it
went into her womb. Maryam became pregnant with Jesus, peace be upon him. Later,
when the signs of pregnancy became apparent on her, her cousin, Joseph (Joseph the son
of Jacob the son of Nathan) the Carpenter, was disturbed and did not know how to inter-
pret that matter. If he wanted to accuse her he would remember how pious she was. If he
wanted to assume her innocence, he would see the signs of pregnancy. So he asked her,
« Tell me, would plants grow without seeds? Would trees grow without rainfall? Would
there be a child without a male? » To all these questions Maryam said, « Yes. » Then she
asked him, « Did you not know that Allâh made the plants emerge without seeds the day
He created them? Did you not know that Allâh created the trees the first time without
rain? Did you not know that Allâh created Adam and Eve without a father or a mother?
» Joseph knew all these things and when she responded in this way, he felt assured of
her innocence and that her pregnancy was something special given to her by Allâh.
Soon enough, Maryam went away from her people. The pangs of birth led her to the
trunk of a dead palm tree. Out of her shyness from the people, and fearing they would
accuse her of having done an ugly act, she wished she was dead and not a trace of her
could be found. Angel Jibril called to her, comforting her. He told her Allâh made a
water stream run under her from which she could drink, and should she shake the trunk
of the dead palm tree next to her, it would turn green and moist dates would fall down
from which she could eat and be nourished. He told her when she faced her people with
her son to tell anyone who questioned her about him that she had made a vow not to talk
to any human for that day. That day, Maryam gave birth to her son, Jesus, peace be upon
him. Forty (40) days later she carried him back to her people. They accused her of hav-
ing fornicated. In response, Maryam pointed to her son, signaling to talk to him. They
were angered at this and thought she was mocking them by asking them to speak with a
40-day old baby lying in a small cradle. At this, Allâh made Jesus speak. He said:
﴿ ﺎًّﻴَﺣ ُﺖْﻣُﺩ ﺎَﻣ ِﺓﺎَﻛَّﺰﻟﺍَﻭ ِﺓﺎَﻠَّﺼﻟﺎِﺑ ﻰِﻧﺎَﺻْﻭَﺃَﻭ ُﺖْﻨُﻛ ﺎَﻣ َﻦْﻳَﺃ ﺎًﻛَﺭﺎَﺒُﻣ ﻰِﻨَﻠَﻌَﺟَﻭ ﺎًّﻴِﺒَﻧ ﻰِﻨَﻠَﻌَﺟَﻭ َﺏﺎَﺘِﻜْﻟﺍ َﻰِﻧﺎَﺗﺍَﺀ ِﻪَّﻠﻟﺍ ُﺪْﺒَﻋ ﻰّﻧِﺇ َﻝﺎَﻗ
ﺎًّﻴَﺣ ُﺚَﻌْﺑُﺃ َﻡْﻮَﻳَﻭ ُﺕﻮُﻣَﺃ َﻡْﻮَﻳَﻭ ُﺕْﺪِﻟُﻭ َﻡْﻮَﻳ َّﻰَﻠَﻋ ُﻡﺎَﻠَّﺴﻟﺍَﻭ ﺎًّﻴِﻘَﺷ ﺍًﺭﺎَّﺒَﺟ ﻰِﻨْﻠَﻌْﺠَﻳ ْﻢَﻟَﻭ ﻰِﺗَﺪِﻟﺍَﻮِﺑ ﺍًّﺮَﺑَﻭ ﴾
These are verses 30-33 of Sûrat Maryam and their meaning is: « I am a slave of Allâh.
He will reveal the Book (Injîl) to me and make me a prophet. He blessed me wherever I
am. He ordered me to perform the Prayers and fulfill Zakah as long as I live. Allâh de-
creed that I will be kind/dutiful to my mother and not arrogant with a bad ending. Peace
was on me the day I was born, on the day I will die, and on the day I will be raised alive
again. »
When Maryam’s people heard that, they refrained from harming her or Prophet Zakar-
iyya, about whom they had made ugly accusations. After Baby Jesus spoke these words,
he did not speak again until he became at an age when children normally begin to speak.
His speaking in the the cradle was a preparation for his coming Prophethood, when he
would call the people to believe in Allâh, the One Who does not have a partner and to
believe in his message - that he was the slave and messenger of Allâh -. The first words
he spoke were, « I am a slave of Allâh.»
To God, the case of Jesus is similar to the case of Adam. God created Adam of soil. He
also created Jesus. He willed for him to be and he was.
ﻢﻳﺮﻣ) ﴾ﺍًﺪْﺒَﻋ ِﻦَﻤْﺣَّﺮﻟﺍ ﻰِﺗﺍَﺀ َّﻻﺇ ِﺽْﺭَﺄْﻟﺍَﻭ ِﺕﺍَﻮَﻤَّﺴﻟﺍ ﻰﻓ ﻦَﻣ ُّﻞُﻛ ﻥﺇ ﺍًﺪَﻟَﻭ َﺬِﺨَّﺘَﻳ ﻥَﺃ ِﻦَﻤْﺣَّﺮﻠِﻟ ﻰِﻐَﺒﻨَﻳ ﺎَﻣَﻭ﴿ :ﻰﻟﺎﻌﺗ ﻝﺎﻗ 92-
93).
It is not befitting to God to have children. There is none in the heavens and the earth but
will be resurrected by Allâh as a slave.
Conclusion
The one seeking salvation must believe in Jesus as ordered by God. Jesus is the slave of
God and His Messenger. He conveyed the religion of Islam and to call people to worship
Allâh, their Creator. Muslims believe in his prophethood and in his truthfulness in con-
veying that message. Prophet `Isa is alive now, living in the second heaven, worshipping
Allâh. He will return to earth before the Day of Judgment and will rule the Muslims with
the Sacred Law of Prophet Muḥammad. Peace be upon this respected, honored and be-
loved Messenger of Allâh.
