Headwords and compound nouns are displayed in bold. Examples and phrases
are displayed in bold and grey type, or in bold and blue on colour screens.
A change in part of speech is indicated by a ■ symbol:

Asterisks are used to indicate the usage register of a particular word or sense as
follows:

Spanish Pronunciation
The pronunciation of Spanish is generally regular and the notes below should
be sufficient to enable an English speaker to read most Spanish words. Because
of this, the only pronunciations shown on the Spanish-English side of the
dictionary are those of foreign words or other words which are pronounced in a
way you would not expect. Pronunciations, where shown, are transcribed using
the International Phonetic Alphabet, which is explained below. Stress in Spanish
words falls on the second last syllable if the word ends in a vowel, n or s; if a
word ends in a consonant the last syllable is stressed. If the stress falls anywhere
else in the word, this is shown by an acute accent over the stressed vowel.
Vowels and diphthongs
Spanish vowels are always pronounced clearly and are not relaxed in
unstressed syllables as in English.
a [a]: Between English a as in pat and u as in hut
pata, amara
e [e]: Similar to English e as in set
me, pelo, sangre
i [i]: Between English i as in bit and ee as in been
iris, filo
o [o]: Similar to English o as in pot
poco, cosa, bomba
u [u]: Between English u as in rule and oo as in foot. Silent after q and in gue,
gui, unless marked by a diaeresis (argüir, fragüe)
luna, aquel, pague
y [i]: When used as a vowel it is pronounced like i
y
ai, ay [ai]: Like i in English side
baile, hay
au [au]: Like ou in English sound
áureo, causa
ei, ey [ei]: Like ey in English they
reina, rey
eu [eu]: Like the vowel sounds in English may-you, without the sound of the y
deuda, feudo
oi, oy [oi]: Like oy in English boy
oiga, soy
Semiconsonants
i, y [i]: Like y in English yes, yacht
bien, yunta
u [w]: Like w in English well
huevo, agua
Consonants
b, v: These letters have the same value.
[b]: At the start of the word and after written m and n the sound is like
English b
bomba, boda, enviar
[ß]: In all other positions the sound is between English b and v in which the lips
do not touch
haba, severo
c [k]: c before a, o, u or a consonant is like English k in keep
calco, acto
[θ]: c before e, i is like English th in thin or in parts of Andalusia and Latin
America like s in English same. In words like acción, sección both types of c
sound are heard [kθ]
celda, cinco
ch [t∫]: Like ch in English church
mucho, chorro
d [d]: At the start of the word and after l and n the sound is like English d
dama, aldea
[ð]: Between vowels and after consonants other than l and n the sound is similar
to English th in this

In the final position it is often not pronounced

g [x]: Before e, i it is similar to Scottish loch

[g]: At the start of the word and after n it is pronounced like English g in get

[γ]: In other positions the sound is softer than in get

ll [ ]: Similar to English lli in million, but often like English yet or pleasure
calle, ella, lluvia
ñ [ ]: Similar to English ni in onion

q [k]: Like English k in kick. Always written in combination with u, which is
silent

r [r]: A single like trill the Scots r. Pronounced like rr at the start of a word and
also after l, n, s
coro, rápido
rr [rr]: Strongly trilled in a way that does not exist in English
torre, burro
s [s]: Except in the instances mentioned next, like English s in same
casa, soso
[z]: Before b, d, g, l, m, n like English rose, phase
desde, asgo, mismo
w: Usually pronounced like Spanish b, v, or like English v, or kept as English w
wáter, week-end, wolframio
y [j]: As English yes, youth
mayo, yo
z [θ]: Like English th in thin or in parts of Andalusia and Latin America like
English s in same

f, k, l, m, n, p, t, x are pronounced as in English
