There are no stones and since the Abernathys owned this place in early times, it is presume the burials
are Abernathys.

There are 5 graves marked only by bid rocks set upright, at the heard and smaller ones at the foot of the
graves. 2 of these graves have rusty star shaped metal markers – Post 22 – Gar –showing they served
in the Civil War.

Adam & Sallie were both born in PA and married there. After their marriage they moved to Adair County,
MO in 1850. Their children were Noah, Hiram, James, Sophia, Jacob, Isaac, Solomon and Sarah (b. MO).
All died in MO except perhaps Noah & Sarah (their place of death not known. According to a family

descendant, Solomon Anspach and Mollie, 3 old soldiers and at lest 2 children are also buried here.

Family.
There were 3 large fancy stones that are gone in 1979. Family was said to have died of Cholera.

the pasture. Land owned by Elmer Cook in 1979. Information from Minnie Warren. Mrs. Warren’s mother
was Bell before her marriage. Derrick & Elizabeth were her great-grandparents. This is a small family
cemetery with stones there. Mrs. Reed was expecting a child when her husband (Amisty Reed) died so
she moved to her parents home (the Bells).

Lloyd Novinger’s mother was Mina Isabelle Boen Novinger (Mrs. Solomon Novinger), daughter of John &
Margaret Douglas Boen. Roxie Boen is Lloyd Novinger’s aunt. It is said that 10 or 12 Mexican railroad
workers who were killed when a load of railroad rails fell on them are buried here.

Broyles Cemetery

Directions: Take HWY 6 west from Novinger to third road going right (north). Take this road just past the
first house. The cemetery is in back of this house in a field. Sec. 26, TWP. 63, R. 11.
There is a large oak tree in this cemetery. Elder David Wortman (buried here) lived in a tent under this
tree. A man, Patrick Dolan, and his daughter who were crossing the country stopped here on their way,
and stayed the night with Elder David Wortman. David and the daughter, Elizabeth, fell in love, were
married and made their home under this oak tree until they built a permanent home .5 mile away. The
Dolans were related to the Patrick Dolans who used to live in this area. David and Elizabeth’s Wortman’s
daughter married James Broyles and they lived in the house with her parents until the parents’ death.
Mettie Broyles Williams and Mrs. Harvey Broyles are sisters. Mrs. Alta Huffman is the daughter of Mrs.
Mettie Wiilliams. One dauthter of the Broyles, Loiuse was living in 1979 in a Milan nursing home. She will
be the last to be buried here. Then the gate will be locked. In 1979 there were 9 graves. Historical material

CARNER Cemetery

Directions: Located in Sec. 33, T 63, R14, east of Kirksville on HWY 11 seven miles into a hay field, ¼ mile in
the east corner (east of pond) on the Roy Mathes farm (1978). It is northeast of the house and can be seen
from the road. The cemetery was originally north of the Antioch Church which was located on HWY 11
and has since been dismantled and removed. The cemetery originally contained two acres and was
fenced and owned by the Carner family. Material compiled by Charles Moore of Kirksville. Cemetery also
known as the "Buck and Bill" and the Antioch Cemetery.
In 1978 the cemetery contained 4 bases of monuments in a row; only one was legible:

Location: This cemetery is located 10 miles north and west of Novinger on O and 2.5 miles north and west
of Stahl. This cemetery was originally called the Allen Cemetery according to Letha Lewis of Kirksville
who submitted this material.
History: Dec. 9, 1849 Richard Gatewood of Fayette County, KY, trustee for Jane Gatewood Allen, his
daughter, purchased from the Government 1750 acres of land in northwestern Adair County, MO, with the
$1200.00 estate of Jane Meaux, the aunt of Jane Gatewood Allen. Richard Gatewood deeded this land to
his daughter, Jane, Oct. 3, 1852. There was 160 acres for each of her 10 children and 160 acres for
herself. On Oct. 31, 1871 Jane Gatewood Allen deeded her daughter Sarah Elizabeth Allen Claybrook, 320
acres. On May 1, 1900,Sarah deeded to her two sons 160 acres each. The west 160 acres to Samuel H.
Claybrook, except one acre for cemetery purposes where the remains of several persons are buried.

Coghill-Floyd Cemetery

Location: This cemetery is located on land owned by Stanley Ambrosia (1979). It is located north on HWY
63 to first gravel road west. Go west about one mile; go through theh ouseyard and around behind to a
pasture gate on the east fence; Go north across the pasture, past a farm shed and over a draw to a
round area of trees which was fenced years ago with cement posts. There is no fence now and cattle
have apparently run through it for may years. Sec. 21, T. 63, R. 15.
History: This burial ground was on the Floyd Family farm. Susan Floyd married John Coghill. It is said to
have had 20 or more graves at one time. In October 1979 there were only four stones:

Cook-Sibole Cemetery

Location: This cemetery is on Willingham farm (1978) south of Stahl, up on hill, after the bridge on Turkey
Branch of Spring Creek. It was fenced and had stones. The farm was formerly owned by Richard Brown.
History: In 1979 Mrs. Ellen Bybee of Buffalo, WY wrote "Jasper Newton Sibole and Phoebe Cook Sibole lived on
the farm with Phoebe’s parents, the Thomas Bishop Cooks. I remember grandma talk of when they cam from
Dearborn County, Indiana with an ox team and crossed the Mississippi River, Oct. 2, 1856 when grandma was
ten years old. –crossed on a ferry boat, and settled on that place in Adair County. In 1874 they set aside this
land for a cemetery and the graves have been cared for by the family though the Sibols moved to a place on
Davis Creek." Mrs. Uribe’s mother was Welltea Sibole Bybee.

Dear Claudia and Carey,
I have found the answers to my questions and have information for both of you.
Per the 1997 Miller Management Services Map, pg 13, Township 63N Range 16W, found in Kirksville City Hall
map(?) office, the only part of the description that's accurate is that it is on the Willingham farm and we did
find stones. A distant cousin, showed me the cemetery's location last June, but it was 2.3 miles away as the crow
flies from the physical description. I will give a better description below. The erroneous physical description
is repeated on a map in the new "Novinger (Adair County) Missouri:" book on page 658, grid E5, location
number 18. We tried to get access to that location only to find the east entry road impassible by auto, and the west
entry road gated and locked. We left a note in a zip-lock bag on the gate's lock in hopes of making contact with the
owner. We had to leave for home (California) the next day.
Today, I received a phone call from the present owner of that farm where I left the note. The Turkey Creek and
Spring Creek mentioned in the physical description join together there. He told me that long ago, the bridge was
destroyed by a heavy load crossing it, and was never replaced. He says that a very old woman says some graves
are in this area. There is an old house on this property that was once used as a temporary schoolhouse when
the schoolhouse in Stahl(?) burned down. The woman as a girl going to the school was told of the graves (near a

bluff?) and to stay away from them. He plans to find the graves and see who is really buried there. He has a
veterinary practice about two blocks from the Kirksville Library and just loves to talk about history. If there are graves
on this property, these may be added to the website as a new discovery.
As far as the Cook-Sibole Cemetery, I would like to offer this correction. I'm not sure of the manner locals
describe the roads/routes, but the numbers themselves are correct:
This cemetery is on the Willingham farm (1997), west ofC onnelsville. From junction of State 6 and 149 at
Novinger, go north on 149 for 2.9 miles and turn left (west) on Route 162, which is a gravel road. Go 0.8 mile on
162 then turn right on Route 163 (northwest). Continue for 1.5 miles and turn left (south) at an unnamed farm
access road. The graves are located among trees on the left approximately 0.1 mile down the access road and
about 10 feet east of the road. Take precautions for ticks in season.
My cousins, of Kirksville, returned to the gravesite last December to take more pictures after the trees dropped their
leaves. They discovered that someone had cleared all the overgrown vines and bushes, and had cleaned and
reset the stones. Pictures taken last summer show one stone was set deep, and new picture shows it raised and
was apparently had been broken off and repaired. Now is a great time to look at the graves.

This physical location would be on the map in the new Novinger book page 658, grid G5, at the 2 o'clock position
at the edge of the circle enclosing the number 5.

Other corrections to the text (in RED) of the small cemeteries web page, some even from the original book, death
dates are from stones, birth dates estimated/verified using years: months: days as stated on the stones:

Location: This cemetery is located 8 miles east of Kirksville and about .5 mile southeast of Sabbath Home
Church on what was known as the old Bobby Propst place, later known as the WilliamM eilike farm. The
burials are in a small timber, on a ridge about 300 yards southwest of the farm house in the middle of a
plowed field (1980). Remnants of a fence remain. It is abandoned and overgrown with weeds and strewn
with dead tree limbs. The only stones found were:
Elliott, Adeline, Oct. 28, 1898 wife of Isaac; aged 81 years, 9

Isaac Feb. 22, 1807 Dec. 4, 1861
Hine, George Sept. 5, 1859 June 14, 1872 son of V. & M.
It is also known that two infants of John W, & MatildaM urfin were buried there 1856-1859 period. There
are probably other graves there, but no other stones were found nor other information learned. This
burial plot has not been used for probably over 100 years. It is believed that Hine may have later been
known as Hines, as a Hines family did live in the Sabbath Home area. Stones were copied by Russell &

Location: To reach this cemetery go through Gibbs (in southeast Adair County) on V (blacktop) to first
gravel road; turn south for about 1 mile. Cemetery is on west side of road – on Cleo Hunter farm. The
cemetery was originally 5 acres.
History: The cemetery is a family cemetery on what was the Elmore farm. It has a steel fence around the
family graves. There are some graves outside the fence. Some say these people were persons who
were part of a wagon train who died of some sort of epidemic. Others say they were neighbors. The
stones of those buried outside the fence have been broken off by farm live stock and have been placed
inside the enclosure. There may be other graves that are unknown. Submitted by Mrs. Russell Wilson,
descendant of J.S. & Nanacy Elmore.

Ely farm burials

Location: North on 63 on the old Ely farm. The land where burials were made is owned by Dr. Milton
English (1980). At one time Ely owned most of the land between T and Sublette (8000 acres) according to
the 4 county history of 1888.
The slave burial site is about ¼ mile back from the road. Ely family members moved to Refuge cemetery.
David & Mary (Jones) Ely (1815-1886) are buried in the Refuge Cemetery.
Everhart farm burial

Location: This burial plot is located by going west from Novinger to the old Bald Knob Church corner, just
past Hammons place. Go south on this road over a bridge to a big hill. The graves, all unmarked, are on
the east side of this hill. Information submitted by Dennis O’Brien of Greencastle, great-grandson of
persons buried here.

Fickle farm burial

It is said that there are some persons buried on the old Fickle farm north of the Jewel Church on Hamilton
land. (Virgil Floyd gave this information). Rube Little, whose mother was a Fickle, did not know of it. It is
presumed to be out in a field with no stones or other markings.

Fletcher-revolutionary soldiers burial

Location: This burial plot is on the old Anspaugh farm 11 miles southwest of Kirksville. Follow for .5 mile an
unmarked road running south from Route N between the entrances to Spring Lake (1979). A grove of
cedar trees near the burial are on the Kenneth Weber farm (1979). These graves are only a short
distance from the Anspaugh family burials. Information from descendant Betty Fletcher Moyer of
Brashear and Peggy Dodson Moots.

Location: This cemetery is located east of Kirksville; east on Normal Avenue to Jamison St., south to first
road going east; east over railroad tracks to first road (north and south) on the southeast corner of the
intersection of L. Shahan farm (1978), in pasture. Sec. 18, T. 62, R. 14.
History: William Geohagan, native of Hancock, Ill., (b. Dec. 11, 1865, son of John J. & Nancy DyeG eohagan)
came to Adair County in 1874 with his parents. He was a farmer and carpenter and came to Kirksville in
1904 as a contractor. He married Daisy Beall in 1896 and they had two children: Dale, killed in WWI and
Letha (b. 1899 d. 1977). Said to be 4 or 5 graves but there are no markers. One grave belongs to a child
(NAIR) of William & Daisy (Bell)G eohagan. (Hazel Gehrke’s mother attended this funeral.) Information
gathered by Charles Moore of Kirksville from Hazel Gehrke & Mrs. L. Shahan.
Graham farm burial plot

Location: The old Roscoe Graham farm was owned by Gary Grubrich in 1979 and this information was
obtained from him. To reach this burial plot take HWY 6 west from Kirksville to Forest Lake Road. Turn
south on this road and go to the road that goes west (right) from the park. Follow this road to near the old
Boy Scout Camp. There are three cabins toward the river. These graves are behind the middle cabin.
There are at least 4 stones; only one is legible:

Greenwood family Cemetery

Location: This cemetery is on the old Gibbs road, south off of HWY 6 east of Kirksville on V to third house
on road, .25 mile back in field. In 1979 the farm was owned by Jim Helton (he provided this information).
This site is said to have been a stage stop in early times and part of the stage stop building is said to be
still standing. Burials are behind this building. Stones show the following burials:

These people were parents of Greenwood for whom Greenwood School in Kirksville was named.

Location: To reach this burial plot take HWY 11 west to K. Take K to DD east,v ear to left toward Pure Air.
There appear to be only two burials and the stones are in good shape. They are on land owned by Dr.
Wilson Bailey in 1979. They are located across the road from Baden Springs Cemetery, back across a
creek up on a hill. They are across from Loren Schille farm (1979).
