Foreword
DMSO is not an easy subject to talk about unemotionally
—least of all for the two of us. We believed when we first
discovered the medical applications of DMSO that we had
uncovered a substance more broadly useful in fighting dis-
ease than any other drug known to man, including aspirin.
And we are firmer in this conviction today, nearly eigh-
teen years later, than we have ever been before. We've wit-
nessed the relief that DMSO has brought to thousands of
people—people who, in many instances, had all but given
up hope that they would ever live normal lives again. In
our collective libraries are thousands of. scientific studies,
clinical reports and personal correspondence from scien-
tists from all over the world that dramatically reinforce
our convictions. We know that DMSO is both a safe and
useful drug, and we know that for certain conditions—
certain types of injuries and certain types of pain—
DMSO is a more effective treatment than any other drug
now in use. We also believe—and the belief carries with

it a considerable amount of anguish and sorrow—that
millions of people are suffering needlessly today—and in
some cases dying—because after eighteen years DMSO
is as yet unavailable to the average person through normal
medical channels.
We hope this book will help to bring about a change in
this unconscionable state of affairs. We agreed to open our
files to Barry Tarshis, the author of this book, because so
much of what has been written about DMSO in the lay
press over the past eighteen years has presented a dis-
torted picture of what DMSO is, how it works and why it
has taken the Food and Drug Administration so long to
make it accessible to the people whose lives could be im-
measurably improved if DMSO were made available to
them. We think this book serves a crucial need, for it pre-
sents for the first time the true story of DMSO.
What you read in this book is likely to encourage you,
and to enrage you. It will encourage you, we think, to
learn that DMSO represents an exciting therapeutic prin-
ciple, a therapeutic approach that for many disorders is
safer and more effective than therapeutic approaches now
in use, a therapeutic approach that offers new hope in dis-
eases for which there is currently no known effective al-
ternate treatment. And it will enrage you, we think, to
discover that the real reason that DMSO is not yet a
generally accepted therapeutic principle in medicine to-
day in the United States has little to do with the safety or
effectiveness of the substance but with considerations
that place more value on regulatory procedures than on
the right of individuals to live without pain or suffering.
Unfortunately, it is impossible to tell the true story of
DMSO without calling into question many of the actions
that the FDA, specifically the New Drug Section of the
FDA, has taken with respect to DMSO over the past
